The story of the U.S.
Army Medical Service Corps is evolutionary. Precursors such as Revolutionary War apothecaries and officers of the Civil War Ambulance Corps evolved into the World War I Sanitary Corps which was established on June 30, 1917, as a temporary part of the Medical Department based on authority provided by an 18 May 1917 Act of Congress. This corps, which rapidly expanded to nearly 3,000 officers during
the War, enabled the relief of physicians from a variety of administrative, technical and scientific duties. The Sanitary Corps was demobilized following the war. During the inter-war years, it became clear that the Army needed a permanent medical ancillary organization. This led to the establishment of the Medical Administrative Corps (MAC) on 4 June 1920. Growth in WW II was spectacular. The MAC increased from less than 100 officers in 1939 to over 22,000 by 1945. These officers freed physicians for patient care responsibilities by occupying an expanded variety of positions. These positions included replacement of the second physician in maneuver battalions. A third precursor, the Pharmacy Corps, was established as a Regular Army branch on 12 July 1943. Finally on 4 August 1947, the Sanitary, Administrative and Pharmacy Corps were replaced by the Medical Service Corps consisting of four sections: Pharmacy, Supply and Administration, Medical Allied Sciences, Sanitary Engineering, and Optometry. Today, MSCs provide the administration, planning, programming and budgeting of every Army Medical Department effort. They maintain the Army's wartime medical capability through command of its field medical establishment. They operate what may be the most effective logistical system anywhere. Six MSCs (2x 70A, 2x C, 2x D—one not pictured) welcomed seven OCS candidates at their Branch Night social. Most had AMEDD backgrounds and were eager to learn more about their future in the Medical Service Corps. The event provided an opportunity to share feedback and perspectives from multiple specialties, and the candidates expressed appreciation for the strong turnout and the warm welcome into the Corps.

This morning, the Medical Service Corps had the distinct honor of hosting a presentation for the Captains Career Course Corps Day. A heartfelt thank you to our Corps Chief, BG Giruad for taking the time to speak with our officers and share valuable insights on the future of the Corps, leadership development, and career opportunities across the AMEDD enterprise.
We also appreciated presentations from other key programs that support and shape our mission—providing our future leaders with the knowledge and inspiration to lead with excellence.

The U.S. Army Surgeon General and Commanding General of U.S. Army Medical Command, Lt. Gen. Mary Izaguirre (center left) and U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud (far right), the 21st Chief of the Army Medical Service Corps and Commanding General of Medical Readiness Command, Europe, celebrated the 108th birthday of the Army Medical Service Corps with a cake cutting held June 30 at Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Also taking part in the event were U.S. Army Col. Tracy Michael (center), commander of the 68th Theater Medical Command, Chief Warrant Officer 5 Deanna Hughes (far left) and 1st Lt. Taylor Cadenhead (right center). The U.S. Army Medical Service Corps consists of four multi-functional areas comprised of twenty-three areas of concentration, and four Additional Skill Identifiers. Medical Service Corps officers serve within the areas of Administrative Health Services, Medical Allied Sciences, Preventive Medicine Sciences, Behavioral Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Optometry, Podiatry, Laboratory Sciences, Aeromedical Evacuation and as Health Services Maintenance Technicians. The Medical Service Corps is the most diverse branch of the U.S. Army.

A READY MEDICAL FORCE!
MUNICH, Germany – Bundeswehr Col. (Dr.) Christoph Hemme (center), Regional Director of the Medical Support Center Munich, provides oversight of simulated dental suturing techniques to U.S. Army (Dr.) Col. Scott Rankin (right), commander of Dental Health Command Europe and Sgt. Maj. Carlos Orsini (left). Rankin and members of his staff visited the Bundeswehr Medical Academy in Munich, Germany Mar. 24-26. During their two-day visit, Rankin and his team had the opportunity to observe Bundeswehr dental personnel conduct hands-on simulated dental surgical training and share lessons learned. The visit by the U.S. Army dental team strengthened ties and partnerships with their host-nation counterparts and leveraged best dental surgical practices.
