Today we're celebrating Lisa, one of our incredible Practice Specialists.
When brothers Juan Jr. and Guillermo first came to Practice Without Pressure, blood draws, vaccinations, and medical appointments brought real fear and anxiety. Lisa met them exactly where they were, with patience, encouragement, and a whole lot of heart.
✨ With Lisa's guidance, Guillermo practiced well visits, vital sign tools, vaccinations, and blood draws, building the confidence to take an active role in his own care.
✨ Juan Jr. carried those skills into the real world, completing an actual blood draw at Quest without being held down or restrained.
Lisa does more than teach skills. She creates a space where individual can practice, cheer each other on, and discover what they're capable of. She sees their courage before they do.
This is what Practice Without Pressure looks like in action: replacing fear with preparation, restraint with respect, and uncertainty with trust.
Thank you, Lisa, for the care, creativity, and compassion you bring to every session. And congratulations, Juan Jr. and Guillermo. You make us so proud! 💙

For many people, a pulse oximeter seems simple. But for individuals living with sensory sensitivities, anxiety, autism, medical trauma, or past negative experiences, it can feel very different.
🔹 It grabs or squeezes the finger without warning, and that pressure can feel uncomfortable or startling.
🔹 It requires stillness, which can be hard when someone already feels on edge.
🔹 It means letting someone into your personal space and handing over your hand, which is a lot to ask of someone you don't yet trust.
That's why we never rush it. At Practice Without Pressure, we start by building a relationship. We explain what's going to happen, let individuals see and touch the tools first, and move at their pace. Every small success builds confidence, and every respected "not yet" builds trust.
So when Cassie calmly placed her finger in that pulse oximeter, it meant so much more than a quick reading. It showed she felt safe, prepared, and in control.
The pulse oximeter may measure oxygen, but Cassie's success measured something much bigger: trust. 💙

We want to hear from you. 💬
Caregiving for a loved one with IDD comes with so much that never makes it into the conversation — the quiet moments, the hard days, the things you carry that no one else sees.
Fill in the blank: The hardest part of caregiving that no one talks about is ___________.
Drop your answer in the comments. You're not alone in this, and your voice might be exactly what another caregiver needs to hear today. 💛

Yes. Practice Without Pressure® is designed to meet each person where they are.
We presume competence and recognize that understanding and communication can look different for everyone. A person does not need to use spoken language or follow traditional verbal directions to participate.
We take the time to learn how each person communicates and work in the moment to build skills and create positive experiences that lead to successful procedures without restraint. Check out our website for more information!

Nothing makes us happier than posts like this!
Liz, mother of A***na, posted about how well A***n did earlier this month with her dental procedure. A***na and her mom and Nana have been working with Power to Marc practice specialists Daisy and Lisa to help her learn to participate in her care using the Practice Without Pressure program. And as we've seen with so many other families, it worked!
Way to go, A***na!! We knew you could do it, and we are SO proud of you!

Answer: It's rooted in Silvan Tomkins' Affect & Script Theory.
✨ Affect Theory: Emotions like fear or distress are automatic, hardwired responses — they fire before a person can even think it through. That "meltdown" in the dental chair? It's not defiance, it's biology.
✨ Script Theory: Over time, those emotional reactions turn into repeated patterns ("scripts"). A scary first medical visit can script fear into every visit after.
Our process works to gently rewrite those scripts, replacing fear with familiarity, one step at a time. 💛

We hear this one a lot. And we get it —caregivers are already stretched thin. But here’s what we also know: a first successful dentist visit without being held down, a haircut completed with calm instead of crisis … these are the moments that can change everything. Small steps forward can build a lifetime of possibility.

This Disability Pride Month, we're celebrating the beautiful, full lives of the IDD community. We're not asking the world to tolerate them, but recognizing what's already true: they are whole, valued, and worthy of love and acceptance without conditions.
To every self-advocate, caregiver, and family who calls this community home: Thank you for showing us what real acceptance looks like. We see you, we celebrate you, and we're grateful to walk alongside you.
