“Starting around June 1, families can use two tools to find nearby sites serving no-cost meals for children 18 and younger ─ VISIT SummerFood.org or CALL 2-1-1. In addition to locating a site, it’s important to frequently use these tools to confirm dates and times and gather more information about meal services.”

🌸🐰 April Adventures Were Full of Fun, Culture, and Fiesta Spirit! 🎉🌷

Our April outings had us hopping all over San Antonio, making memories and enjoying everything our beautiful city has to offer! First, we went on a mission to hunt down the Easter Bunny 🐇🥚 and celebrate all things spring.

We also honored our beloved Selena’s birthday 💜✨ by exploring colorful murals and celebrating the Queen of Tejano’s lasting impact on our community.

We took time to do our crafting, celebrate birthdays, volunteer work, and donate some plastic bottles to Franklin Elementary for their fundraiser with Pepsi Rally.

The beautiful spring weather gave us the perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while visiting one of San Antonio’s historic Missions ⛪🌳 and learning more about the rich history that surrounds us.

Of course, it wouldn’t be April in San Antonio without joining in on the excitement of Fiesta! 🎊🌺 We had so much fun participating in events at St. Philip's College and UTSA - The University of Texas at San Antonio, soaking up the music, culture, and community spirit. And although the rainy weather tried its best to dampen our Fiesta fun ☔🌦️, we didn’t let it stop us—we celebrated anyway, because a little rain can’t wash away our Fiesta spirit! 💃🎉

One of the biggest highlights of the month was getting to experience the spectacular Battle of the Flowers Parade 🌸🎉🌼—a truly unforgettable day! A heartfelt thank you to the San Antonio Founder Lions Club for making this special experience possible for our group. Your love for our group helped create memories we’ll treasure forever. ❤️

Here’s to learning, exploring, celebrating, and making every moment count together!

A great resource for parents and students wanting to have a better understanding of the processes and resources available to students with special needs!

🎓 Self-Advocacy for Students: Teaching Them to Use Their Voice

As parents, we fight for our children every day—but one of the most powerful things we can do is teach them how to advocate for themselves.

Self-advocacy is not something that starts in adulthood. It starts now—in school, in IEP meetings, and in everyday conversations.

Under IDEA, students are not just participants…
they can become leaders of their own educational journey.

✨ So how do we begin?

🔹 Start with Awareness
Help your child understand their disability in a positive, empowering way.
“What helps you learn best?” is a great place to start.

🔹 Teach Them Their Supports
Make sure your child knows their accommodations and services.
Example: “I get extra time on tests” or “I can ask for breaks.”

🔹 Practice Communication Skills
Role-play simple phrases they can use:
“Can you explain that another way?”
“I need more time to finish.”
“This is hard for me—can you help me?”

🔹 Invite Them to the Table
As they get older, encourage them to attend their ARD/IEP meetings—even if just for a few minutes at first.

🔹 Let Them Lead Small Parts
They can:
Share their strengths
Talk about their goals
Express what helps them succeed

🔹 Build Confidence, Not Fear
Self-advocacy is not about being confrontational—it’s about being clear, confident, and understood.

💡 The goal is simple:
From “someone speaks for me” → to “I can speak for myself.”

At Holy Spirit Special Education Advocacy, we don’t just advocate for children—we equip families and students with the tools to lead with confidence.

📧 [email protected]

We provide Special Education Advocacy Services at NO COST for low-income families and income-based services for others.
If you need someone to stand with you—or teach your child how to stand for themselves—we are here.

Because one day… they won’t need us in the room.

And that’s the goal. 💙

In true fashion (because fun takes priority😉 ) Better late than never—March was FULL of fun, community, and big moments! 💚✨

We explored the wonders of the zoo and the zoo train ride was a favorite 🚂🐾! We spent time out and about at local malls, and enjoyed a peaceful day at Woodlawn Lake feeding the ducks 🦆🌿

We also celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in style Pop Art, festive vibes and green ice cream at Chicken N Pickle 🍀🍦

One of our proudest highlights? Supporting one of our very own as she continues her journey as a screenwriter! 🎬 She had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with an amazing team from Northwest Vista College to bring a scene from her screenplay to life as an animated project. We love seeing dreams in action! 💫

March was all about connection, creativity, and community—and that is what we are always busy doing!
