This may ruffle a few feathers, but it needs to be said.

And I say this with absolutely no disrespect to my senior living sales colleagues. I spent years sitting in that same seat.

When a family asks, “What could care cost?” the answer should not simply be, “I’m not clinical, so I can’t tell you.”

Yes, the clinical or care team may need to complete an assessment before giving an exact care quote. But assisted living is fundamentally a non-medical residential care model, and much of the support being priced is assistance with activities of daily living: bathing, dressing, toileting, transfers, medication assistance, escorting, and similar needs.

Families deserve to understand how those services are priced BEFORE making one of the largest financial decisions of their loved one’s life.

That means being able to explain:
• How care levels are calculated
• What each level costs
• How a point-based system works, if one is used
• What typically causes care costs to increase
• What the highest level of care could potentially cost
• What their monthly expenses could look like as their loved one’s needs progress

The assessment determines where someone falls within the pricing structure. It shouldn’t be the first time a family learns what that pricing structure actually is.

Comparing senior living communities is already difficult enough. Rent, care, medication management, additional services, and other fees can all be structured differently.

Transparency matters.

A family shouldn’t move someone into assisted living at $8,000 a month only to discover later that the same community could cost $12,000, $14,000, or more as care needs increase.

We can do better.

Families deserve to understand not only what senior living costs TODAY, but what it could realistically cost TOMORROW.

That’s informed decision-making.

5 Things Worth Your Money in Senior Living

Senior living can be EXPENSIVE… so if you’re going to spend the money, make sure you’re paying for things that actually improve your loved one’s care and quality of life.

Here are 5 things I think are worth paying more for:

1. Reputation for care & staffing
2. A nurse on site
3. An elevated dining menu
4. A geriatric care manager
5. A concierge physician

These are the things that can make a real difference in the day-to-day experience and level of care your loved one receives.

And remember: the most expensive community isn’t automatically the best community.

Save this before your next senior living tour and send it to someone helping a parent make this decision.

Need help figuring out what’s actually worth paying for? DM me.

Our team prioritizes ongoing educational topics pertaining to our clients needs. Today four of our team members attended the San Francisco Senior Round Table to hear Dr. Jason Won speak on chronic pain by addressing its root causes through targeted strength-building, movement education, and long-term mobility strategies.
