Today, the Immunotherapy Foundation and our incredible team of leaders are celebrating our 6th anniversary! This last year was anything but easy for just about everybody, but our year became an incredible journey of innovation, determination, and included an outpouring of support from our community that was unparalleled.

In 2020, IF granted our largest research grant in a fiscal year since our founding to support the collaborative precision cancer immunotherapy research at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego and the La Jolla Institute for Immunology! Those dollars have been dedicated to the personalized cell therapy trial launched in 2017. In December 2020, Patient #1 received his treatment and is now back home with his family. This achievement was only possible because of our amazing community.

As we look ahead to 2021, IF is continuing to solidify our community partnerships with our fellow non-profits and our research partners. Stay tuned for more exciting news. Thank you all!

Today is International Women's Day and we're taking a moment to recognize and appreciate the amazing women in the field of immunotherapy.

For instance, Phillippa Marrack, Ph.D, FRS, is an English immunologist who is best known for her research and discoveries regarding T cells (immune system cells that are vital to killing cancer cells). She has an incredible history and has been recognized for her work for many years. One of her milestones includes being the first female member in the Cancer Research Institute's Scientific Advisory Council. In 2000, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Immunologists, and in 2015, was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.

We thank Dr. Marrack for her incredible work and we look forward to furthering immunotherapy as a cancer treatment option!

Today is International HPV Awareness Day and we're proudly doing our part to encourage everyone to take action and learn more about and how it affects all of us! There are over 200 related viruses that make up Human papillomaviruses, and while most are low-risk, there are certain ones that are cancer-causing, high-risk strains.

As of August 2020, the CDC says that over 21,000 cancer cases in women and over 14,000 cancer cases in men were linked with HPV each year. So how can you reduce your risk?

1. Get vaccinated! Vaccines can help to protect against some types of HPV, so make sure you talk to your healthcare provider about this option.

2. Get screened! For example, getting screened for cervical cancer to check for abnormal cells is a painless and quick test.

To completely understand your risk, make sure you have a conversation with your healthcare provider about your options. For more information about HPV-related cancers, visit our page: https://www.theimmunotherapyfoundation.org/hpv-related-cancers/
