During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we’re proud to recognize the incredible support behind our team’s wellness.

Thanks to the generosity of CHP Area Offices across Border Division, the California Highway Patrol Border Communications Center received nearly $4,000 in donations. This allowed us to create a dedicated fitness & wellness room for our dispatchers and operators.

With these funds, we’ve added a brand-new treadmill, rowing machine, and stationary bike, investing in both the physical and mental well-being of the professionals who are always there when it matters most.

We are truly grateful for the support and recognition of our personnel. Your contributions are making a lasting impact. 💛

Feeling tired behind the wheel isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s dangerous. Driving while drowsy can slow reaction times, impact decision-making, and increase the risk of serious crashes.

According to , sleepiness can result in crashes at any time of the day or night, but three factors are most commonly associated with drowsy-driving crashes:

• Occur most frequently between midnight and 6 a.m., or in the late afternoon. At both times of the day, people experience dips in their circadian rhythm—the human body’s internal clock that regulates sleep.
• Often involve only a single driver (and no passengers) running off the road at a high rate of speed with no evidence of braking.
• Frequently occur on rural roads and highways.

If you feel drowsy while driving, pull over at a safe location and rest. Stay safe, California. 🩵

During the 2025 New Year's Enforcement Period, CHP officers were on duty across the state, responding not only to enforcement needs but also to significant winter weather impacts statewide.

Despite continued hazardous weather, CHP officers conducted 9,308 enforcement actions, issued 5,458 citations, and made 379 DUI arrests to help keep California’s roadways safe. Speed remained a major safety concern, with 2,972 speeding citations issued, including 92 drivers traveling more than 100 mph.

Tragically, six fatal crashes occurred in CHP jurisdiction. Speeding, impaired driving, and failure to wear seat belts continue to be leading factors in serious and fatal crashes. Seat belts save lives: every seat, every trip.

CHP urges everyone to:
• Buckle up
• Slow down, especially in adverse weather
• Drive sober and stay focused every day

Wherever the road takes you, your safety is our mission—rain or shine.

Earlier this week, Public Safety Dispatcher Steffen received a BOLO from an allied agency for an elderly male with dementia, who was driving his vehicle within the CHP Oceanside Area.

PSD Roth and PSD Hunt dispatched the BOLO to CHP Oceanside Officers, while PSD Lemos stayed on the line with the allied agency, who provided continuous location updates via a tracking device on the vehicle. PSD Lemos, Roth and Hunt provided these location updates to CHP Officers from the Oceanside Area.

While patrolling, Sergeant Hollywood was able to locate the BOLO vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Lieutenant Maxson was also in the field and responded to the traffic stop, along with Officer Fulmer. This led to a positive identification for the missing gentleman.

PSD Lemos connected the allied agency deputy to Sergeant Hollywood and they arranged for the elderly gentleman to be transported to the CHP Oceanside Area Office, where his family was able to safely reunite with him.

It’s moments like these that prove the importance of teamwork between our Public Safety Dispatchers and Patrol Officers.

Job well done!

Officer Huerta from the CHP San Diego Area is joining our dispatchers and operators for a sit along!

Newly graduated officers spend an entire shift at Border Communications Center to get an insider view on how calls for service are received and dispatched to our patrol officers. This gives them a better understanding of how complex and hectic it can get on the other side of the radio, provides them a chance to ask questions and receive advice on making sure their radio traffic is 10-2!

Good luck to Officer Huerta, who will be patrolling the San Diego area solo, for the first time tomorrow!

It is with profound sorrow that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Miguel Cano, ID 23555.

In the early morning hours of July 2, 2025, at approximately 0028 hours, Officer Cano, faithfully serving the West Los Angeles Area, suffered a suspected medical emergency while on patrol. Tragically, his vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree.

Emergency personnel responded without delay, and Officer Cano was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Despite exhaustive life-saving measures, he was pronounced deceased at 0140 hours.

Officer Cano was a dedicated public servant who embodied the values of courage, commitment, and compassion. His service to the people of California will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his loving wife and devoted parents. The California Highway Patrol offers its deepest condolences to Officer Cano’s family, friends, and fellow officers. We honor the legacy of a hero who gave his all in service to others.
