[Event Info] The latest victims in the war against immigrants: Migrant boat capsizes off San Diego coast
[Date] May 4th at 7PM
[Zoom] https://sdsu.zoom.us/j/88567373072

The world has watched in horror the photos and videos of immigrants, wreckage, and the bodies of the dead washing up on shore off the San Diego Coast. At least four people have died and another 25 injured after the vessel capsized Sunday on a Point Loma reef near the Cabrillo National Monument.

The Biden administration has continued the attacks on asylum, the caging of children, and the building of the Border Wall, as well as demanded increased militarism by Mexican police and border patrol. Millions of doses of vaccine were offered to Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) in exchange for increased border repression, which has forced migrants into deadlier crossing conditions in the desert or at sea.

The wreckage at the San Diego tourist monument is a tragic expression of Biden’s immigration policies washed ashore for all to see in its brutality. Prior to pandemic poverty, extortion, and the violence has pushed millions North in search of a better life. That phenomenon has only been exacerbated with the lack of assistance and further desperation brought on by the pandemic, coupled with inaction by the governments of Central and South America.

The attacks against immigrants are also an international phenomenon and tragedies such as this one are increasing in their frequency. On the very same day, at least 11 people drowned Sunday when a rubber dinghy carrying two dozen Europe-bound migrants capsized off Libya. Just last Monday Spain's coast guard announced it found 17 migrants who had died stranded on a boat off the Canary Islands. Last month some 130 migrants were presumed dead after their boat capsized off Libya’s coast.

The international working class must unite in a fight for socialism to put an end to the attacks on immigrants, the rising death tolls of migrants and the paralel victims of the pandemic. This past Saturday on May 1st, the ICFI and its affiliated Socialist Equality Parties hosted an online International May Day rally with speakers all over the world, issuing a call for the formation of the International Workers Alliance of Rank-and-File Committees.

As immigrants face increased attacks, millions of lives have been lost due to the pandemic, while the wealth of the ruling elites grew astronomically. Join the IYSSE at SDSU on Tuesday May 4th at 7PM for a discussion on why the unity of the international working class is necessary as well as the perspective of world socialist revolution.

Throughout last year and into the first months of this year, teachers across the US and the world have been fighting back against decades of budget cuts, furloughs, and dilapidating conditions at their schools. The classroom has been ground zero in a bipartisan assault to siphon funds meant for public education into the coffers of the ultra-rich and the for-profit charter school industry. Teachers and students are unanimous in their opposition to these policies and are fighting to have school districts adequately funded, more teachers hired to reduce class sizes, and more.

However, in each state and city where teachers and students have gone on strike, the teacher unions that claim to be fighting on their behalf have actively collaborated with school boards and local politicians to sell out the teachers in favor of private interests, resulting in labor contacts that hardly meet teacher demands. The national role played by trade unions in every country illustrates that the unions can no longer function as an organization for teachers and students to fight for their right to public education. Instead, new organizations of rank and file committees independent of the unions are needed to carry out strikes to their finish in the broader fight to defend public education as a whole.

IYSSE members who have been active in recent teachers strikes from Oakland to Los Angeles will speak on Tuesday about their experiences talking to teachers and students on the need to organize outside of the unions for a state and nationwide strike. The IYSSE, in playing this active role, is fighting for socialist consciousness among teachers and students as the fight to defend public education is inseparable from overthrowing the yoke of capitalist domination in every aspect of social life.

Yesterday, Bernie Sanders endorsed the Trump administration’s regime change operation and coup attempt in Venezuela under the guise of “humanitarian aid.”

This endorsement further reveals Sanders as a phony “progressive” and a pseudo-socialist supporter of American imperialism.

The tweet generated opposition and anger from Sanders supporters, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd and numerous others.
