A community that stands united against the dangers of human trafficking is a community that can stop it. Today, I had the honor of speaking about human trafficking at the Unite North County Coastal Annual Luncheon.

Unite North County Coastal plays a vital role in identifying community needs and aligning resources throughout the North County San Diego region. This year, their focus is on raising awareness about human trafficking and connecting local partners to create real, community-driven solutions.

Human trafficking remains one of the most urgent public safety and human rights issues in our region. As long as even one victim remains, our work is not done. You can learn more about what the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is doing to combat human trafficking at SanDiegoDA.gov.

Justice, nearly 30 years later.

Michael D. Graham was sentenced to 60-years-to-life in prison for the 1996 r**e and sexual assault of a 6-year-old girl in University City.

A DNA match through the national CODIS database ultimately helped investigators identify Graham and bring him back to San Diego to face justice.

Today, DA Summer Stephan joined San Diego Police Department law enforcement partners to share how decades of persistent investigative work and advances in DNA technology helped solve this case.

We never forget victims. We never stop seeking justice. And no matter how much time passes, we will continue to find those responsible.

Why does testing sexual assault kits matter?

In this week’s Weekly DA News, DA Summer Stephan revisits San Diego County’s work to eliminate the backlog of sexual assault kits.

By 2022, approximately 2,030 previously backlogged kits from 12 law enforcement agencies had been tested. Results showed that 735 contained DNA from someone other than the victim.

DA Stephan explains how DNA evidence can help identify unknown suspects or provide corroborating evidence when the suspect is known—and why sexual assault kits are an important piece of the evidence considered in these cases.

Every number represents a life. Every life matters.

DA Summer Stephan joined County Public Health Officer Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan on GODRadio1.com with Dr. Leonard J. Thompson and Dr. Robert Earl Dean to discuss the San Diego County Substance Use and Overdose Prevention Taskforce (SUOPT) and the upcoming Amazing Grace event.
The conversation highlights why this work is especially important in the Black/African American community, where overdose continues to have a devastating impact. By understanding the data, raising awareness and connecting people with resources, SUOPT and its community partners are working to prevent overdose deaths and save lives.

The Amazing Grace event will bring the community together to remember those we’ve lost, share resources and empower families with information that can make a difference.

From phone scams to online fraud, knowledge is one of the best defenses.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate three outstanding members of the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office who were recognized this week by the California District Attorneys Association for their exceptional service, leadership and commitment to justice. 👏

🏆 Taraneh Sarebanha, Assistant Executive Director of One Safe Place: San Diego County Family Justice Centers, received the CDAA Harold Boscovich Award, recognizing a Victim Advocate in California who exemplifies outstanding advocacy, professionalism and commitment to serving victims.

Taraneh has dedicated her career to helping victims and their families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Since helping establish One Safe Place – The North County Family Justice Center in 2021, she has been instrumental in creating a trauma-informed, comprehensive approach to victim services. Her compassion, leadership and tireless advocacy have helped countless victims feel heard, supported and safe.

🏆 Chief Deputy District Attorney Frank Jackson received the CDAA Instructor of the Year Award, recognizing his dedication to training and developing the next generation of prosecutors and legal professionals. Through his knowledge, experience and commitment to teaching, Frank helps strengthen the skills and expertise of those who serve our communities.

🏆 Deputy District Attorney Matthew Greco received the George Williamson Career Achievement Award, an honor recognizing a prosecutor who exemplifies the highest standards of the profession through a career focused on complex and difficult criminal or civil prosecutions.

Throughout his career, Matt has demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication and commitment to justice — qualities that define an outstanding career prosecutor.

Remembering those we’ve lost. Recommitting to saving lives.

In this week’s DA News, DA Summer Stephan reflects on International Overdose Awareness Day and San Diego County’s continued work to prevent overdose deaths.

While overdose deaths have declined 36% since 2021, the crisis is changing. Methamphetamine is now involved in more overdose deaths than fentanyl in San Diego County, underscoring the need for continued prevention, treatment, education and targeted intervention.

"It was the privilege of a lifetime to be her mother.”

Today, at Yolanda Marodi’s sentencing, Lorena Marodi shared a powerful victim impact statement honoring her daughter, Cal Fire Captain Rebecca “Becky” Marodi.

Lorena spoke about the devastating loss of her daughter and the lasting impact Rebecca’s death has had on her family and loved ones.

Rebecca dedicated more than 30 years of her life to serving others as a firefighter and captain. Her life was one of service, compassion and courage — a legacy her family will carry forward.

Yolanda Marodi was sentenced today to 36 years to life in state prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

We honor Rebecca’s memory and stand with her family as they continue to grieve an unimaginable loss.
