💫 The People’s Gallery Art Exhibition: In Service of Liberty 💫

The San Diego Law Library is partnering with The Veterans Art Project (VetArt.Org) to host an exciting art exhibition where the theme is: In Service of Liberty.

This gallery will feature a diverse array of visual art pieces created by veterans, active-duty service members, and friends and family members of those who have served. Each piece will reflect the artist’s unique and deeply personal perspective on what it means to serve this country.

The exhibition will be featured at the San Diego Law Library at: 1105 Front St., San Diego, CA from: November 3 – December 30, 2026.

Join us at this year‘s Bernard E. Witkin Award Dinner to celebrate the Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc., Federal Community Defender Organization, Community Trainings for Excellence in Legal Education! ⚖️

Based in San Diego, the Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. (FDSDI) is comprised of dedicated attorneys and staff personnel, all of whom are involved in providing essential legal services to indigent individuals accused of criminal offenses in federal court.

In addition to providing excellent client representation, FDSDI strengthens the legal community by offering free, MCLE-approved training for local criminal defense practitioners on all aspects of federal trial practice.

Additionally, FDSDI’s annual Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Seminar brings together judges, attorneys, and other legal professionals to discuss CJA practices and procedures, substantive federal law updates, and practicing in federal court.

The FDSDI also gives attorneys access to its informative handouts on the jury selection practices of judges in the Southern District of California and to its motions bank, which contains the most up-to-date motions on a variety of issues in federal criminal court practice.

The Witkin Awards are named after Bernard E. Witkin, who was an accomplished attorney, writer, lecturer, CA Supreme Court clerk, and Reporter of Decisions. Best known for his publications, Witkin's work continues to have a meaningful impact on the Californian legal profession. The Witkin Awards dinner, put on by San Diego Law Library Foundation, raises funds through ticket sales and donations, which go towards supporting the San Diego Law Library’s mission of providing access to justice.

Join us at the annual Witkin Award Dinner on October 21, 2026 to recognize Gerald “Jerry” Davee! ⚖️

A graduate of SDSU and UCLA law school, Jerry Davee has had an impressive legal career in public service. He began at Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps, where he represented both individual and institutional clients in a wide range of civil cases and served as a pro bono Federal Defender on many high-intensity criminal cases.

Davee’s extraordinary career has taken him to legal proceedings all across the United States, where he acted as counsel to a diverse array of clients, including medical patients, lawyers, professional athletes, the San Diego Zoo, and SDSU.

Davee has been honored with countless awards highlighting his passion for philanthropy, including the Chargers Champions Community Award, the KPOP “Ageless Hero” Award, and the San Diego Bar Association’s “Daniel T Broderick III Award.”

Davee has also led the legal community as President of the San Diego Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, Vice President and Director of the San Diego County Bar Association, fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and more.

Join us at the annual Witkin Award Dinner on October 21, 2026 to recognize the Honorable Judge Barry Moskowitz for Excellence in the Adjudication of Law! ⚖️

With more than four decades of dedicated service, Judge Moskowitz has had an extraordinary career in the federal judiciary.

After graduating from Rutgers University in 1972 and Rutgers School of Law Newark in 1975, Moskowitz began as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. The following year, he went on to serve as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District Court of New Jersey (1976-1982) and, later, for the Southern District of California (1985). Continuing his career in California’s Southern District, Moskowitz was appointed U.S. Magistrate Judge (1986-1995), then went on to become a District Judge (appointed 1995), and, finally, served as the Chief Judge there from 2012-2019.

The Witkin Awards are named after Bernard E. Witkin, who was an accomplished attorney, writer, lecturer, CA Supreme Court clerk, and Reporter of Decisions. Watch out for a new scam about property tax making the rounds.
San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Larry Cohen, MBA, is warning homeowners, particularly seniors, about a property tax scam circulating through social media, online videos and telephone solicitations that falsely claims homeowners can reduce or freeze their property taxes by filing a supposed federal IRS “Form 1098-SR.”
No such IRS form or federal property tax relief program exists.
