Join the City Nature Challenge on iNaturalist April 24-27th. Get our your phone. Get out your camera. Look high and look low. Take pictures of creatures great and small and submit observations on iNaturalist. We'd love to have you making observations at Famosa Slough, an area with both aquatic and terrestrial life.

Yellow-crowned night heron visits Famosa Slough and investigates - looking for crabs. No luck in this moment but a beauty to observe. Join in our upcoming restoration events if you are available any of these mornings: April 24, April 25, or May 9th.

Join us for two upcoming events. Saturday April 25th is the annual Creek to Bay Cleanup from 9-12. Register now! And if you are free on the morning of Friday, April 24th join in a San Diego Bird Alliance Habitat Restoration event. The estuary benefits so much from volunteers who remove non-native plants, trash, and improve the habitat for wildlife.

Don't miss our meeting Monday April 6 from 6-8 at Pt. Loma/Hervey Library. SDSU Professor covering the geologic evolution of the Famosa Slough, then separatly a brief update on birds across the years. The geology and hydrology are a big part of what makes Famosa Slough a wildlife destination.

*** 40 years old!*** Celebrate Friends of Famosa Slough by attending our meeting Monday April 6 from 6-8pm at the Point Loma/Hervey Library. Featured speaker is Stephen Schellenberg from San Diego State University: A birds-eye view of the evolution of Famosa Slough: From the geologic past to the future anthropocene. Lesley Handa will also be giving a quick comparison of the bird species that visited the slough over the 40 years and considerations for future habitat at the slough with focused efforts to preserve tidal marsh with Sea Level Rise.

We'd love to see you Friday and Saturday when we will be prepping for planting and installing native plants at Famosa Slough. Events are 9-12. Friday meet on the North side of W. Pt. Loma Blvd, and Saturday meet on the South side of W. Pt. Loma. Family friendly, wear long sleeves and solid shoes. Tools and gloves will be provided.

Count the ducks! How many individuals do you see? How many species? When the tide is high, the ducks visit the vegetated (and suddenly underwater) area near the treatment ponds. Winter will likely bring even more duck species.

It's a songbird world, we're just living in it. Two of these species are not native, they're likely escaped pets that have grown into naturalized populations. Do you know which ones? 1) White crowned sparrow 2) Song sparrow 3) Swinhoe's white eye 4) Lincoln's sparrow 5) Scaly breasted munia 6) House finch 7) Black phoebe 8) Orange crowned warbler (bonus Allen's hummingbird theatrics).
