Ready to Push the Limits Beneath the Ice?
The Arctic Submarine Laboratory is on the hunt for its next Arctic Operations Specialist (Ice Pilot) — an elite role for those who crave challenge, thrive in the unknown, and have the grit to operate where few dare to venture.
As an AOS, you won’t just assist crews preparing for Arctic deployment — you’ll join them on the edge of the world, navigating under frozen oceans and supporting missions that test the limits of human and machine. This is more than a job — it’s an expedition into one of the harshest, most awe-inspiring environments on Earth.
You’ll work shoulder to shoulder with some of the Navy’s finest submariners, helping them prepare for and succeed in extreme under-ice operations. It's a rare opportunity to break away from the ordinary and become part of something extraordinary.
Ideal candidates bring extensive submarine experience, an unshakable sense of purpose, and a desire to do something truly different.

The countdown has begun!!

A little late on this post, but 15 days ago, Howard Reese officially retired from the Arctic Submarine Laboratory, marking the end of an incredible chapter. Howard wasn’t just a valued member of the team—he was the steady foundation we all leaned on. His knowledge, work ethic, and leadership helped shape the culture and success of the lab for years.

It’s hard to imagine this place without him, and whoever steps into his role will have some very big shoes to fill. Howard, your presence will truly be missed, but we’re grateful for everything you gave and excited to see what your next journey brings.

Wishing you a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement. Thank you for everything.

What is sea ice?

“Sea ice is frozen seawater that floats on the ocean surface…Although sea ice moves around the Arctic basin, it tends to stay in the cold Arctic waters. Pieces of ice, known as floes, are more prone to converge, or bump into each other, and pile up into thick ridges”.

-National Snow and Ice Data Center
