Irving J. Gill was a prominent Southern California architect whose innovative designs at the turn of the last century created what we now call Modern Architecture. Cossit Cottage is one of the first examples of Gill's modern buildings. It is a cube in its basic form and devoid of ornament. This was in 1910 when Gill's contemporaries were still building homes in Victorian, Italianate, and other common ornamented historic styles.
Unlike the cold and sterile European modernists that would come later, Gill understood San Diego's exceptional climate and geography and how to make an architecture that was a perfect fit. He mastered the art of building simple, clean, modern, delightful, and highly livable homes.
Cossitt Cottage takes full advantage of San Diego's Southern California charms. It offers excellent sunlight, regardless of the time of day. And it captures the breezes coming off the nearby Pacific Ocean and wafting up the adjacent canyon.
Enjoy your morning coffee on the eastern or southern very private back patios.
