CHP - Otay Mesa Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility

It is with profound sorrow that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Miguel Cano, ID 23555.

In the early morning hours of July 2, 2025, at approximately 0028 hours, Officer Cano, faithfully serving the West Los Angeles Area, suffered a suspected medical emergency while on patrol. Tragically, his vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree.

Emergency personnel responded without delay, and Officer Cano was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Despite exhaustive life-saving measures, he was pronounced deceased at 0140 hours.

Officer Cano was a dedicated public servant who embodied the values of courage, commitment, and compassion. His service to the people of California will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his loving wife and devoted parents. The California Highway Patrol offers its deepest condolences to Officer Cano’s family, friends, and fellow officers. We honor the legacy of a hero who gave his all in service to others.

The Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle (SMPV) Program For over 40 years, the CHP has used SMPVs to tackle specific traffic safety challenges. This month, the CHP is deploying the next generation of SMPVs across the state. These vehicles come in a variety of distinctive colors and have a version of the traditional CHP vehicle markings in sharp contrast on the doors. Assigned to one of 17 enforcement facilities across California, CVIS's play a crucial role in maintaining safe roadways for the public.
