In observance of Juneteenth, CHW will be closed on Friday, June 19.
Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when news of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day to honor freedom, reflect on our nation’s history, and celebrate the resilience, culture, and contributions of Black Americans.
As we recognize this important holiday, we encourage everyone to take time to learn, reflect, celebrate, and engage in ways that are meaningful to them.
Wishing you a meaningful Juneteenth.

Yesterday, Community HousingWorks celebrated the progress being made on Navajo Family Apartments, a new 45-unit affordable housing community in the City of San Diego's San Carlos neighborhood. This neighborhood is designated as a "Highest Resource Area" by the California Fair Housing Task Force because of its proximity to resources such as schools, transit, grocery and pharmacies, and libraries.
Navajo Family Apartments will create new affordable homes designed to support families and individuals making 30%-70% of the area median income and will have 8 units set aside for residents with an intellectual or developmental disability. These homes are being created through strong partnerships, shared vision, and years of dedication from public agencies, financial partners, community stakeholders, and development professionals committed to creating lasting impact.
We were honored to celebrate alongside Mayor Todd Gloria; Councilmember Raul Campillo; Supervisor Joel Anderson; Dr. Elizabeth Hernandez of the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency; Colin Miller of the San Diego Housing Commission; the National Equity Fund team; Gabriel Brown of Columbia Bank; Saralynn Keenan of San Diego Regional Center; and Community HousingWorks leaders Sean Spear and Kevin Leichner, and board member Elizabeth Ramirez.
Developments like Navajo Family Apartments demonstrate what can be achieved when communities come together around a common goal: creating more opportunities for residents to live, grow, and thrive.
Together, we're building more than housing—we're building stronger communities. 💚
Thank you to the partners and funders who helped make Navajo Family Apartments possible: California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (CTCAC), County of San Diego, San Diego Regional Center, National Equity Fund (NEF), San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC), California Department of Developmental Services (DDS), Columbia Bank, the City of San Diego, and Capital One.
We also thank our development team—Highland General Contractor Design Builder, Bowman, and Rodriguez Associates Architects and Planners, Inc.—for their expertise and commitment in bringing this vision to life.

We’re proud to share that Community HousingWorks received TWO honors at the San Diego Housing Federation Ruby Awards!
🏆 Jacaranda on 9th was named Project of the Year – New Construction (Under 90 Units), recognizing its impact in providing deeply affordable homes and supportive services for seniors, working families, veterans, and individuals rebuilding their lives in downtown San Diego.
🏆 Carmen Gaxiola of Paradise Creek received the Outstanding Resident Leader Award for her years of dedication to building community, advocating for environmental justice, and empowering her neighbors. Since moving to Paradise Creek in 2016 as one of the community’s first residents, Carmen has helped transform shared spaces, champion resident engagement, lead community garden initiatives, and become a powerful voice for positive change in National City. Her leadership is rooted in a simple belief: strong communities are built when neighbors come together.
These awards reflect the incredible impact that happens when affordable housing is paired with opportunity, connection, and resident leadership.
Congratulations to Carmen and everyone who helped make Jacaranda on 9th a reality. We’re honored to celebrate these achievements alongside our residents, partners, supporters, and team members. 💚

💚 47 people have already stepped up to support resident services at Community HousingWorks — and we’re inspired by the momentum this community continues to build.
Every donation helps connect residents and families with resources that strengthen long-term stability, including:
✨ Financial coaching
✨ Wellness support
✨ Education programs
✨ Community resources
These services provide critical support for families working to navigate rising costs, economic uncertainty, and everyday challenges with greater stability and opportunity.
We need just 3 more donors to help us unlock an additional $25,000 for resident services before May 31. There’s still time to make an impact, and every contribution brings us one step closer.
To everyone who has donated, shared, or supported this campaign so far: thank you for believing in stronger, more connected communities. 🏡
