Speaking Truth to Power: A Conversation with the Acclaimed Investigatory Journalist and SDSU Alum Abby Martin

From 2012 to 2015, Ms. Martin hosted the investigatory series Breaking the Set for RT America. There, she famously criticized the network’s coverage of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. Since 2015, she has hosted “Empire Files,” which documents the harmful consequences of US foreign policy and militarism on the most vulnerable communities throughout the globe. She has directed “Gaza Fights for Freedom” (2019) and “Earth’s Greatest Enemy” (2025), which chronicles the record of the US military at the world’s leading polluter.
In a conversation, with Political Science Chair Jonathan Graubart, Abby will discuss her journey from political science major at SDSU to a leading investigatory journalist and filmmaker devoted to holding accountable the powerful and giving voice to the oppressed.

The Center for Human Rights at San Diego State University, Miner Anderson Family Foundation, and Alliance San Diego are pleased to announce the first Human Rights Education Workshop for Secondary School Teachers.
The workshop will consist of 5 in-person meetings at SDSU during the 2025-2026 academic year (Saturdays: October 4, December 6, February 21, April 11, and May 16), with Zoom check-ins in between.
Teachers completing the workshop will receive a $300 stipend and a certificate of participation.
Deadline to apply: September 1, 2025.

A Conversation with Nathan Thrall, San Diego State University, Arts and Letters 201, October 8, 7-8:30
Nathan Thrall will discuss “A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy” with SDSU Political Science Professor Jonathan Graubart. The book won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. Beyond the events depicted in the book, the conversation will cover current developments in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel and the challenges of facilitating productive discussion on college campuses.
Nathan Thrall is also the author of "The Only Language They Understand: Forcing Compromise in Israel and Palestine." His writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Guardian, London Review of Books, and The New York Review of Books and been translated into more than two dozen languages. He spent a decade at the International Crisis Group, where he was director of the Arab-Israeli Project, and has taught at Bard College. He lives in Jerusalem.
Jonathan Graubart is a professor and chair of the SDSU Political Science Department. He is the author of Jewish Self-Determination beyond Zionism: Lessons from Hannah Arendt and other Pariahs (Temple University Press 2023). His article “It is Deadly and Oppressive but Is It One State? Assessing the New One-State Reality Paradigm” is forthcoming in Palestine/Israel Review.
