In opposition to Mayor Todd Gloria’s proposed budget, a number of San Diego City Council members have proposed a different plan that would cut funding for automated license plate reader cameras, or “Flock cameras,” in order to restore funding for libraries, recreation centers, and arts and culture initiatives. Hundreds of San Diegans recently made their voices heard during hours of public budget debate, which led to this proposal.
This new proposal would end the city’s contract for Flock cameras and save about $2.2 million, It’s currentlysupported by council members Sean Elo-Rivera, Henry Foster, Kent Lee, and Vivian Moreno. Police can monitor vehicles connected to crimes with the aid of Flock cameras, but the technology has come under fire from the public, pushing back against government surveillance.
Working people get significant wins when we collectively build community pressure with one unified voice. For weeks now, advocates from all backgrounds have been vocal about retaining important money for library and arts funding. Automated license plate reader cameras are used to help ICE abduct our immigrant neighbors. We must stand against mass surveillance and for our fundamental rights. San Diego’s budget will continue to be debated and go through changes until it’s made final on June 25th.

Now that the county has an official budget recommendation, working San Diegans should make our voices heard at upcoming public hearings. Public services would receive $3.6 billion, or 39% of the budget. This includes $852 million set aside for initiatives like MediCal, CalFresh, and CalWorks, and $2.2 billion for the county’s Health and Human Services agency. Of that, $23 million is intended to assist families in navigating the new qualifying rules for benefits. Behavioral Health Services, which manages services for drug and alcohol misuse and mental health, would receive $1.4 billion. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department will get $1.43 billion of the $3 billion proposed in the budget for public safety.
The County Administration Center downtown will host public hearings on the suggested budget on June 1 at 5pm. Before the updated budget is released on June 12, residents can also provide online feedback until June 11. Final discussions are scheduled for June 25, starting at 9am in the County Administration Center.
Budgets are moral documents. San Diegans have until June 11th to flood public hearings and speak up together. We’re seeing cuts in library and park services, along with arts and culture services. The county should prioritize services and resources that will meet the needs of all residents. As a start, the county Sheriff’s department is incredibly bloated and we don’t want money for police militarization and more harassment. Those funds can easily be redirected towards improving housing, education and healthcare. A socialist county government would have priorities in the right places to take care of our people.

Here in San Diego, General Dynamics - NASSCO has been awarded $856 million by the Navy to build a fuel ship at its shipyard on the San Diego Bay. The last large shipyard on the West Coast, NASSCO, now has a larger contract that includes this order. They have been hired to build 17 “oilers,” which are ships that can transport 157,000 barrels of oil, including biofuels, and travel up to 7,000 miles.
At this intersection of capitalism and military, the pursuit of corporate profit and market growth drives the continuous production of military assets for war. San Diego’s self-sustaining loop of war-heavy capitalism is worth about $61.3 billion. While executives and major corporations get huge government subsidies, the working class is confronted with housing shortages and higher costs. The military industrial complex right here in San Diego causes enormous sums of money and labor to be diverted from our infrastructure, healthcare, and education to warfare. We know a better world is possible, a world free from this cruel system.

This year’s African Liberation Day in San Diego was powerful. The celebration started with solidarity statements from community organizations, followed by a historical documentary film depicting where the movement has been and where it is going today. African People’s Socialist Party and African National Women’s Organization hosted multiple panel discussions with longtime organizers. Speakers gave an informative walkthrough of African Internationalism and reminded attendees of why Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah and Malcolm X, and Chairman Omali Yesh*tela provide inspiration on how to move forward.

According to a report on conditions at immigration detention facilities throughout the state, including the Otay Mesa Detention Center, the facility’s overcrowding is a crisis brought on by a notable rise in immigration arrests over the last year. According to the 175-page study, six detainees died in ICE detention between September 2025 and March 2026, the highest amount since the state DOJ began conducting assessments in 2017.
According to the DOJ’s investigation, there were “surges in population” at the facility, which affected the length of the admission process, the cleanliness of the living units, and availability of many other resources. Otay Mesa’s population was around 21% higher during the DOJ’s two-day tour of the facility last fall than it was during the DOJ’s previous visit in 2023. Detainees have mentioned insufficient food and water portions as well as a lack of beds and restrooms for the full facility population. According to the report, detainees “stated that their housing units often had 20-30 people over capacity.” Otay Mesa was the only institution in California with a protocol requiring detainees to undergo a strip search following every visit with friends or relatives. According to inmates, this practice has a severe detrimental effect on their mental health and sense of dignity.
This is yet another example of the Trump administration dehumanizing immigrants. Private corporations like CoreCivic and GEO Group are making more profit than ever before as ICE abductions have dramatically increased. This cruel system incentivizes kidnapping more people to help their bottom line. The overcrowding facilities, awful conditions, and lack of medical care clearly violate human rights but that’s not going to change the right-wing agenda. Community organizations must continue to bring attention to what’s happening and must build the pressure necessary to make a significant difference. When us working people build enough power, we will see real justice. No one is illegal on stolen land.
