Supporters of a proposed “billionaire tax” in California say they’ve gathered more than 1.5 million signatures—nearly double what’s needed—to place the measure on the November ballot. The initiative would impose a one‑time 5% tax on residents with a net worth above $1.1 billion, with most of the revenue dedicated to healthcare. A smaller tax would apply to those worth between $1 billion and $1.1 billion, and the measure would apply retroactively to anyone living in the state as of Jan. 1, 2026.

The proposal was drafted by the Service Employees International Union–United Healthcare Workers West, whose members argue that soaring living costs and cuts to medical services justify asking the state’s wealthiest residents to contribute more. State officials will now verify the signatures; at least 875,000 must be valid for the measure to qualify for the ballot.
