🎃PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST 🎃
It’s time to get creative! Carve it, paint it, glue it, decorate it - and get the whole family involved! Bring your decorated pumpkin to school on Friday, October 23rd between 7:15-7:40am. During the school day, students will get to vote for their favorite pumpkin in each age group:
• TK-1st
• 2nd-3rd
• 4th-5th
Teachers and staff will also choose an additional winner for Most Creative!
All pumpkins will be on display at the Sandburg’s Fall Festival on Saturday, October 24th.

Please remember that all pumpkins must be picked up Saturday between 7:00-8:00pm after the festival. Unfortunately, any pumpkins left after 8:00pm will be discarded during clean-up.

The rumors are true! Our hungry candy monsters are back and hungrier than ever. They’ve slumbered for nearly a year and now they’re ready to feast!! On candy donations!

Candy donations help make the magic happen at our Table-or-Treat booths, providing sweet treats for students to enjoy at every game and activity!

🙋FOUNDATION GENERAL MEETING
The next general foundation meeting is on Monday, October 19 at 6pm in the library. The Foundation is Sandburg’s only parent group, we do not have a PTA or PTO. We provide academic experiences and community building events for our Sandburg Tiger family.

The meetings are open to the public and we encourage all families to attend. Kids are welcome to come, however there is no childcare, so we encourage you to bring a quiet activity to entertain your children. Hope to see you there!

We're still looking for a few more parents and community members to participate in Sandburg's Career Day and share their career journey with our 4th and 5th graders.

On Monday, November 9, students will have the opportunity to meet professionals from a variety of fields, learn what a typical day looks like, and ask questions about careers that spark their curiosity.

You don't need a "traditional" career to make an impact. In fact, some of the most memorable presentations come from careers students have never heard of before! Whether you work in technology, healthcare, construction, the arts, entrepreneurship, public service, skilled trades, or something completely unexpected, we'd love to have you join us.

A short presentation can open students' eyes to new possibilities and inspire future dreams. Thank you for considering this opportunity!

Principal Message – 10/4/2026

Good Evening Sandburg Tiger Families!
It is crazy to think that it is already October and we have just completed our 8th week of the school year. On Friday, we were excited to celebrate our Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind Leaders. This next month we practice. Habit 3: Put First Things First. Habit 3 teaches us to work first, then play! This habit helps children learn how to prioritize what is most important, make responsible choices, and manage their time. Families can practice Habit 3 at home by creating simple routines for homework, chores, reading, bedtime, and screen time. Encourage your child to complete important responsibilities before moving on to fun activities. You can also model Habit 3 by talking about your own priorities: “First, I need to finish making dinner, and then we can play a game together.” Small routines like these help children build independence, responsibility, and healthy habits that will serve them for years to come!

Sandburg Closed Campus Policy
We have noticed an uptick in additional adults on campus and wanted to reiterate our Closed Campus Policy which is in place primarily for student safety.

The only parents on campus in the morning should be those participating in run club. No other parent/adult should be on campus unless they are a staff member or have checked in at the office and have a visitor sticker.

When run club is done, all parents should exit campus immediately. Parents are not allowed to walk their child to the classroom or breakfast.

After school, there should also not be parents on campus unless they have a scheduled appointment with the teacher. Parents should check in at the office and get a sticker prior to going to a classroom.

Staff has been reminded of this policy. If a staff member asks you to exit campus or to go to the office to get a sticker, please do so immediately.

We appreciate your support in following this important Sandburg policy.

Extra Modified Day October 9th - 12:05 Dismissal
There is an additional modified day on Friday, October 9th. Teachers will be scheduling Early Intervention Conferences with parents to discuss students who may be struggling and need additional support. All students will be dismissed at 12:05 PM. Please make arrangements to pick your child up on time.

SDUSD School Choice Enrollment Period
If you moved out of the Sandburg boundaries during this school year, are a TK student who is out of Sandburg boundaries and not currently CHOICEed in, or have friends that want to join our amazing Sandburg family, please read the information below. For the groups listed above, if you would like your student to continue here at Sandburg you MUST complete a CHOICE application. The CHOICE program allows students to enroll at their non-neighborhood school. The CHOICE priority window will be open from Monday, October 5th through Sunday November 15, 2026 for the 27-28 school year. We would enjoy having a continued partnership in educating your students here at Sandburg. San Diego Unified School District will sponsor two Parents as Partners Choice Workshops moderated by the Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options Office.

The presentation will:

• Provide answers to frequently asked questions by parents and give attendees the opportunity to ask questions.

They will present this topic on Wednesday October 14th at 5:30pm to 6:30pm and Thursday, October 15, 2026 at 11:30am to 12:30pm.

Core Academy
We had to cancel our first 2 Core Academy sessions that were scheduled due to lack of enrollment. The future fall dates are 10/17, 11/7, 12/5 and we are excited to offer this opportunity to students and families. Any student who has been absent from school has the opportunity to attend Core Academy and get credit for one of those absences. Getting credit removes the absence from the student’s record and increases funding for San Diego Unified. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Robyn at [email protected]. Please complete the Core Academy Permission slip if you are interested in having your Tiger attend a future core academy. Only students who have absences to make up will generate funds to support Core Academy. On the Wednesday prior to Core Academy, if we do not have enough students with absences enrolled, we will communicate with you in regard to whether Core Academy will be occurring or not. The San Diego County regional Science Olympiad will be happening Saturday, February 6th. We are excited to once again have Sandburg teams entering the competition, sponsored by the Foundation.

Science Olympiad is an optional after school opportunity for interested 3rd- 5th graders. A sign up link for interested students will be coming out in the near future.
