Navy Ombudsman Background:

On September 14, 1970, Admiral Zumwalt, Jr. stepped forward to formally recognize the sacrifices Navy families make when their military spouses, fathers and mothers deploy. He said it was time these courageous people had a voice in the military, a direct channel to the command to vent their worries, suggestions, needs and fears. This is when the Ombudsman program was created. The Ombudsman program is established to improve mission readiness through improved family readiness. The Ombudsman acts as the liaisons between military families and the command. Ombudsman keep records of both civilian and military resources that families can take advantage of to solve numerous sorts of problems, and can open communication between families and the command They are instrumental in resolving family issues before the issues require extensive command attention. The Command Ombudsman is appointed by and works under the guidance of the Commanding Officer who determines the priorities of the program, the roles and relationships of those involved in it, and the type and level of support it will receive.
