Today is the 53rd anniversary of the Navy Family Ombudsman Program⚓️

On September 14, 1970, Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr., Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), established the Navy Family Ombudsman Program when he issued Z-gram 24 (the 24th policy directive issued during his term as CNO). Z-gram 24 emphasized the importance of Navy spouses (families) and established a procedure that gave spouses the opportunity to present their complaints, viewpoints, and suggestions to the CO. By doing so, Zumwalt acknowledged the vital role spouses play and provided them with what he described as an “official representative to express their views to commanding officers and base commanders.”

I want to take this time to say THANK YOU to the command & military families for the service you have provided me! I have learned so much in serving our sailors and families, alongside fellow Ombudsmen in their watchful hands. Our Ombudsmen support the Navy in mission and family readiness. We say, “family readiness ensures sailor readiness and Navy mission readiness.”
