While one chapter for the San Diego Promise Zone closes, another one begins!
On Thursday, partners, residents and community leaders came together to celebrate a decade of impact and officially launch the San Diego Promise Zone Alliance, a new community-led model that will continue driving meaningful change in our neighborhoods.
Over the past 10 years, the City has led the federally designated San Diego Promise Zone in partnership with more than 80 organizations. During that time, they secured more than $800 million in grant funding, expanded digital equity efforts, increased access to financial services, strengthened youth career pathways, and advanced strategies that support housing, health, education and economic opportunity. The federal designation officially ends on Saturday, June 6.
The City remains committed to supporting this transition as a partner of the new San Diego Promise Zone Alliance.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Pool is back open! 🏊
After an 18-month closure for its first major renovation since opening over 50 years ago, the pool has opened just in time for community members to cool off, swim, relax and have fun this summer.

We're stepping up street repairs! 🚧 In addition to the City’s regular pothole repair program, Transportation Department crews are conducting weekly inspections and repairs in neighborhoods with fewer reported potholes.
By identifying and fixing potholes before they’re reported, crews are helping keep streets safer and in better condition for everyone.

This week, the City kicked off its third iteration of the state-funded Summer City Civics program by welcoming 50 students ages 16 to 30 who will participate in this unique internship opportunity. Based on what our previous interns say, it's no surprise that the total number of Summer City Civics participants has grown to more than 300 in just three years!
"I felt like I was doing meaningful work, had time for myself and could ponder my own future when not working."
"I really hope that the City continues Summer Civics and provides this opportunity, especially for those who may have struggles and barriers in regular education paths."
"The exposure to all the different departments and activities of the City really opened my eyes to the importance and opportunities of local public service."

Beginning July 1, 2026, the City will no longer collect trash from black containers as part of the regular service route. Moving to City-provided gray bins helps us make sure only eligible households receive service, at the level they select, so that you only pay for what you need.
This change applies only to black containers at this time. To receive trash collection from the City, you must have a City-provided gray container at your property on your scheduled pickup day. Recycling and organic waste collection continues as scheduled through completion of new bin rollout.
Please take a moment to confirm you have the correct container color and size, so your trash collection is not interrupted. Confirm your service through the Residential Waste Collection Services Portal via sandiego.gov/trash Account creation is easy and takes just a few minutes. If you do not have a login, you can create an account online or call 858-694-7000 for assistance.
Please remember: Only homeowners or designated property managers or secondary account users can request service changes, including container size, color or number of containers.
For Homeowners
If you already have a City-provided gray container, you are set. If you need a City-provided gray container, a different size or an additional container, only you or those you designate can request those changes. Log in via sandiego.gov/trash or call 858-694-7000.
For Renters
Service changes can only be requested by your homeowner, or a landlord or property manager, if designated by the owner. If you need a City-provided gray container or have questions about your service, please contact them as soon as possible so they can submit a request.
