Dear Manny,
In light of these new allegations, we, as co-chairs of Alice, are calling you in and asking you to take responsibility, acknowledge the harm, and withdraw from the race for District 8 Supervisor.
It’s unfortunately common for sexual assault to occur in our community. Too many people in our community have experienced unwanted sexual touching firsthand. At bars, at parties, at the places we gather as a community to celebrate and be ourselves. From strangers they will never see again, or people who they continue to see around the community for years, affecting how they show up and even if they continue to.
Gay and Bisexual men are too often overlooked as victims of sexual assault. Too many have similar stories to the ones Brad, or Ryan and his partner, described. Too often, in our own community, we don’t even recognize many of these actions such as unwanted touching and groping as what they are, with victims only working it out later. Sometimes much later. The delay does not diminish the harm or make the experiences less deserving of being heard.
We also recognize that some people amplifying these allegations may express antisemitism, and we reject that unequivocally. The presence of antisemitism in some responses does not establish that the allegations themselves are rooted in antisemitism, nor should it prevent us from taking them seriously. We can confront antisemitism while also asking for accountability.
Calling you in means asking you to respond with honesty, care, and a willingness to listen to those describing harm. We believe that stepping out of the race is a necessary part of that response and would create space for accountability and repair.
