BiSHoP is a nonprofit that is dedicated to ensuring vulnerable members of our community have access to affordable housing in San Francisco, and we also advocate for their right to keep it.

This upcoming election will be THE pivotal election for housing in San Francisco for the next decade. With the federal government doing very little to improve the housing situation for everyday people, our local and state elections will take on an even larger role.

MILLIONS of dollars are being poured into campaigns to limit propositions like these from even being voted on. Regardless of how you feel about candidates, the issue of housing affordability impacts everyone searching for a sustainable home that includes peace, dignity, and safety.

That’s why we’re calling on you, our community, to join us in spreading the word about these local San Francisco propositions! Spread the word: YES ON B-I-C!

TENANT POWER IS PEOPLE POWER!

This week, we joined our allies in the SF Anti-Displacement Coalition (SFADC), including Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco, Inc., South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN), Asian Law Caucus, and more for hosting a press conference at 907 Valencia, where tenants have been organizing and striking against their negligent landlords.

Our message? Tenant power is real, and leverage can be achieved. Organized and informed tenants can DEFEND THEIR RIGHTS, even against massive landlords.

We’re grateful for the tenants from 907 Valencia who spoke their truth, telling stories of struggle, organization, and success against their corporate landlords at Mosser.

Supervisors Jackie Filder and Myrna Melgar 梅義加 District 7 Supervisor also joined our call to organize, joining forces with our coalition to bring legislation to the table that aims to reduce evictions based on “nuisance” (after a 41% jump in that specific category this year) and minor rental debts.

We need our elected officials now, more than ever, to expand the toolkit for tenant defense if we want to seriously address San Francisco’s rental crisis.

Together, we’re working to bring down rents, end evictions, and to KEEP PEOPLE HOUSED across San Francisco. Vote YES on Props B, I, and C, and stay tuned for more on the fight for fair housing in The City!

Ten years ago, after years of organizing and resisting displacement, SoMa Pilipinas was officially recognized as San Francisco’s Filipino Cultural Heritage District.

SoMa holds deep meaning for our community, serving as a hub for Filipinos for many generations. This is where our original housing services began, supporting Filipino seniors, WWII veterans, and families facing displacement in the late 2000s, and it remains a community that shapes our work today. The current movement against displacement stands on the shoulders of community members, unions, and activists like Bill Sorro who stood up and resisted the displacement of seniors from the International Hotel in Manilatown along Kearny Street in the 1970s.

From Kapwa Rising on Bryant Street and Pagsasama-Sama on Folsom to streets named for Rizal, Mabini, Lapu-Lapu, Bonifacio, and Tandang Sora, SoMa’s landscape honors the resilience, culture, and belonging of Filipino immigrants and families.

Now, BiSHoP is currently partnering with SoMa Pilipinas to connect with families displaced by the Moscone Center/Yerba Buena Redevelopment, a population now eligible for a Certificate of Preference for affordable housing.

We were proud to sponsor Dekada and celebrate a decade of community power, in a room filled with people who understand the displacement and housing instability our community is fighting.
