Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose fight for social justice was instrumental in passing the Fair Housing Act of 1968. His legacy drives our commitment to dismantling structural racism and ensuring that everyone — especially those with the greatest needs — has a place to thrive.

In his spirit, MOHCD remains dedicated to achieving racial equity through policies that foster inclusive communities and increase Black homeownership. This MLK Day, let’s recommit to the ongoing pursuit of housing justice for all.

This Black History Month, the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development honors the rich legacy of Black leaders, advocates, and community builders who have shaped our city’s history and continue to inspire our vision for the future.

Housing and economic opportunity are fundamental to justice, and we remain committed to advancing policies that promote equity, inclusion, and access for all. As we reflect on the past, we reaffirm our dedication to creating pathways for Black homeownership, investing in historically underserved neighborhoods, and ensuring that all residents have a place to call home.

Together, we celebrate Black history — not just in February, but every day — as we work toward a city where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

February is Black History Month!

This year, we celebrate with the theme “African Americans and the Arts.”

The art created by African Americans is deeply rooted in their African, Caribbean, and Black American experiences. This influence can be seen across various fields such as visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary arts, and other forms of cultural expression. The impact of African American culture on these artistic mediums has been significant.

African American artists have utilized their craft to not only preserve history but also to commemorate the collective memory of their communities. Through art, they have found a means of empowerment and self-expression. Several artistic and cultural movements have emerged from the African American community throughout history.

For 2024, we take a closer look at the diverse history and vibrant life that surrounds African American arts and artisans. It is an opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of creativity that has emerged from this community over time, as well as to engage in deeper listening and centering of Black voices and experiences. We invite you to join us as we do the work to expand what we understand about the past, share more of what matters in the present, and reimagine what’s possible for the future!

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King’s advocacy for equal rights and social justice extended to fighting against housing discrimination and segregation. His efforts and leadership played a crucial role in the passing of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which has had a lasting impact on creating more inclusive and equitable housing opportunities for all individuals across the United States.

Dr. King continues to inspire us as we continue on our journey to ensure that all people, particularly those with the greatest needs, have a place in the community and the support they need to thrive. Like Dr. King, MOHCD believes that the path to racial equity is grounded in the voices and experiences of those disparately impacted by structural racism and will only be attained through deliberate practices, policies, and programming that produce and sustain racially equitable outcomes.

On this MLK Day, may we all be inspired to continue the fight for equality, equity, and justice, particularly in the area of fair housing and increased Black homeownership.

Happy Pride, San Francisco!

Did you know that the rainbow flag has its origins in our beloved city? Since the late 1970s, the rainbow flag has been an international symbol of LGBTQ+ pride, and more recent iterations continue to represent and emphasize progress and inclusivity. You can see the original Pride flag in the archives of the GLBT Historical Society Museum in San Francisco.

We hope you all have a wonderful Pride!
