San Francisco Public Montessori is making a world-class educational method available to public school families for the first time in San Francisco. A first-of-its-kind program in the San Francisco Unified School District, we're now in our eighth (and best!) year as a pre-school and elementary program. Your support helps us close the gap between what the state and school district pay for and what we actually need to grow and maintain an authentic, high quality Montessori school.

PTA Leadership - We Need YOU!

We welcome and NEED new people in key PTA roles, and this is especially true now that our community has been so disrupted by the pandemic. Please join us and help guide our priorities, plan events, and have fun! You do not need any experience or special skills.

Many important roles are open for next year. Descriptions are here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x2OdV29WIbJGbgRN2d-J8EJnkQ39EFOWVpxcBoxTkkE/edit?usp=sharing

You can indicate your leadership or volunteer interests in this survey https://forms.gle/ek5NWNUizceigCvJ7 or just email Alex at [email protected].

Alta Plaza Meetup

SFPM families will once again be meeting on Saturday at 2pm at Alta Plaza Park for safe outdoor play. This is not a school or PTA event, but all families are welcome and invited. Please wear a mask. For those families who would prefer smaller gatherings, we are considering options - please share your ideas with [email protected].

Yearbook

As you all know, the Yearbook is coming together, thanks to the hard work of the SFPM Student Yearbook committee led by SFPM parent Andrea Bornstein Bayer (5th grader Alex's mom), Principal Keener, the 5th grade student Safety Patrol, and our wonderful teachers.

To order yearbooks go to https://www.treering.com/validate?PassCode=1014584025794799. Please let Ms. Keener or Ms. Marilyn know if you need financial assistance to purchase a yearbook - we have funds available to help make sure every student can have one.

Grab and Go Food Service Volunteering

Our beloved SFPM nutrition manager, Ms. Nancy, is currently running the SFUSD grab and go food service at Rosa Parks Elementary. They are always in need of help at various schools around town. Please consider signing up for a shift if you can: bit.ly/SNSvolunteersignup.

PTA Memberships

Join or renew your PTA membership. This is super important, as only members can vote, and we need quorum in order to stay legal as an organization. We manage a substantial budget and have to stay compliant, so please help by checking your status and joining or renewing here: https://jointotem.com/ca/san-francisco/san-francisco-public-montessori-pta

March 1 2021: Keener's Corner

Dear SFPM Families,

SFUSD is moving into In Person/Hybrid learning classroom setup for Wave 2 and 3 schools. Remember, SFPM is a Wave 3 school and things are happening! Teachers are scheduling vaccinations and I have my first dose tomorrow! Movers came last week and set up classrooms for in person learning. Check out the instructional space and virtual walkthrough to get a glimpse of what our classrooms will look like when we return to in-person learning.

Below is what our district team is doing:

installing social distancing posters and floor decals throughout the school including the classrooms, restrooms, offices and hallways

Ensuring desks are spaced 6 feet apart from each other, the teacher’s desk and the front of the classroom

Staging PPE in each classroom, office, and shared space

Setting up screening stations at all designated entrances

Installing partitions on teacher’s desks, in shared offices, and where designated for students

Replacing waste bins where necessary

Installing and filling hand sanitizer and soap dispensers

Closing off select sinks and urinals to maintain social distancing in the restrooms

Closing off drinking fountains to reduce a possible source of transmission

Where materials have been left out, they will covered with butcher paper or sheets to reduce a possible source of transmission

Be sure to check the latest Covid and In Person learning updates at Family Digest sent out every Wednesday.

Each episode includes a culturally affirming science based daily lesson, original song, read aloud, and movement activity, as well as segments from the community. The theme this week on SF Loves Learning is “I am a Scientist!” Next week's theme is "How to Use All Your Senses as a Scientist!" All segments of each episode are in alignment with these themes throughout the weeks. You can search for any segment of any episode by segment type, educator, Graduate Profile skill, and more in our digital library. Segments from this week include titles such as:

Are You a Scientist? Daily Lesson

Green is a Chile Pepper: Read Aloud

Exploring Science Through Dance: Movement Segment

Rinconcito del invierno: Original Song

You can also find Seesaw activities linked in SFUSD’s digital library and on our SF Loves Learning Seesaw page. To contribute content for the show, fill out this form (make sure to click “Community” for Type of Segment). To offer feedback about the show, email Brian Fox at [email protected].

Upcoming Assessment Window

Assessments are an important part of SFUSD’s plan for high-quality teaching and learning. Like class assignments and report cards, assessments provide information to teachers and parents, as one gauge of student progress toward mastery of grade and learning goals.

Assessments that will be administered during spring Distance Learning are listed below:

Reading Inventory (3-5) - February 1-26th

The Reading Inventory measures students’ abilities to process texts of increasing levels of complexity using Lexiles. Lexile measures provide a “target reading range”, which serves as a starting point for matching readers to texts. The RI measures allow for monitoring a child’s progress and growth in reading across the school year and across grade levels. With this information teachers can recommend texts to readers, create goals, design instruction, and monitor progress in reading. RI can be used as one measure to identify students for intervention or challenge, and to inform scoring on standards based reports cards

Math Milestone - K-5 February 5th -25th

Math Milestone Tasks are embedded assessments within the SFUSD Math Core Curriculum in grades K-5. Teachers already administer and score these assessments as part of math instruction. Scores are reported once each in Fall and Spring.. Assessments have been modified for Distance Learning.

ELPAC (English Learner Proficiency Assessment for California) - February - May If your child is an English Learner, they will take the ELPAC in reading, writing, listening and speaking. This is a computer adaptive assessment and takes about 65 minutes for K-2 and 180 for 3rd - 5th graders. Student Reports provide detailed information (translated into Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog, Spanish and Vietnamese) on ELPAC student performance in the listening, speaking, reading and writing components of the test along with an overall ELPAC score. This report also includes a rubric for each performance level. These will be available in ParentVue for families when the testing has been completed.

Pre K

DRDP -The Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP)© is a developmental continuum from early infancy to kindergarten entry. It is a formative assessment instrument for young children and their families used to inform instruction and program development. Our Pre K teachers collect evidence around developmental progress and will share their findings with you during conference week.
