We’re proud to share that Governor Gavin Newsom recently issued a letter officially recognizing California Adopt-a-Pet Day and its role in helping shelter animals find loving homes.

In his letter, Governor Newsom highlighted California Adopt-a-Pet Day as a statewide collaboration among CalAnimals, the San Francisco SPCA, and the ASPCA, bringing together shelters across California to promote adoption and reduce overcrowding.

This recognition reflects the growing momentum behind a movement that has already helped thousands of animals find families since its launch in 2024. It also underscores the importance of continued investment in adoption, access to care, spay/neuter services, and policies that support animals, pet guardians, and shelters throughout California.

At the SF SPCA, we’re honored to lead this effort alongside our partners and the nearly 150 shelters and rescue organizations participating this year.

This Star Wars Day, use the Force...of video chat to meet your new loyal companion. 🚀✨🪐

Our Virtual Adoption Program means that you don't need to visit our shelter to adopt a cat or dog. Instead, meet our adoptable animals through a virtual meet-and-greet.

Meet Some of Our Adoptable Jedi

⭐ Rizzo, who teaches that true power lies not in speed, but in the perfect couch nap.

⭐ Nebula, whose name is already out of this world.

⭐ Tulip, who reveals her power of unstoppable love only to those who earn her trust.

⭐ Piper, who brings balance to the Force through zoomies, snuggles, and joyful chaos.

⭐ Ellie, who explores the galaxy one sniff at a time.

⭐ Oso, who is ready to be the Chewbacca to your Han Solo.

If you’re interested in meeting our adoptable animals over video chat, please schedule a virtual adoption appointment: https://www.sfspca.org/virtual-adoption-appointment/

Please note that kittens are not eligible for virtual adoption.

Do we have some special animals right now or what? Our shelter staff are here to tell you who their furry BFF’s are. Let us know if you love these guys just as much as we do!

🐕Kenya—The ideal puppy for any adopter, experienced or new to the world of puppy love!
🐈‍⬛Jersey—A working kitty who would love to help keep your home free of any critters and let you admire her grace from afar.
🐕Cheese—A consistent staff favorite who needs time to warm up but becomes the most loving, silly companion in the world!
🐕Robin—A big boy who’s endlessly excited about life and is ready to learn any and all tricks you may have up your sleeve.

Meet all of these animals and more by visiting our adoption center at 250 Florida Street or online through our Virtual Adoption Program at sfspca.org/adoption-process.

You can take any of our animals home by paying their adoption fee OR by signing up to become a monthly donor. We’d love to have you join our community in any capacity.

Beezus came to the San Francisco SPCA as a young Terrier mix, full of curiosity, joy, and a little uncertainty as she adjusted to life in the city. But even then, her sweet, social nature shone through.

Today, Beezus is thriving in her new home and bringing sunshine everywhere she goes.

Her adopter shares that “Every day with her has been a joy. She is sweet, loving, and smart. She’s excelling with all her cues, is learning great manners, has recall down already, and is the most social, friendly dog ever. She’s like a magnet—dogs and people are drawn to her and her happy energy! And she relishes the attention...Thank you for taking such good care of her until I could find her. She is truly a little slice of heaven.” ❤️

On Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, we’re celebrating stories like Beezus’s and all the animals still waiting for their next chapter in a loving home. Adopt a shelter pet today!

We’re excited to share that Cornerstone Animal Center is officially open in Visalia, CA! 🐾

In a region where cost and distance put basic veterinary services out of reach, Cornerstone delivers affordable spay/neuter, vaccinations, and wellness care close to home.

The clinic is led by local animal welfare leader Cassie Heffington, who has more than a decade of experience in the Tulare County shelter system. Cassie’s expertise informed the clinic's focus on prevention, access, and long-term impact. Cornerstone is a local solution designed to create lasting change with support from PetSmart Veterinary Services, Maddie's Fund, and the SF SPCA.

By expanding access to spay/neuter and preventative care in the Central Valley, Cornerstone helps reduce the number of animals entering shelters in the first place—strengthening an interconnected animal welfare system that spans California.

This new clinic is one of the ways we’re building a more accessible system for animals and the people who love them.
