The Bay Area Air District is the country's first regional air pollution control agency. The California Legislature created the Air District in 1955.

The Air District is tasked with regulating stationary sources of air pollution in the nine counties that surround San Francisco Bay: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southwestern Solano and southern Sonoma counties. It is governed by a 24-member Board of Directors composed of locally elected officials from each of the nine Bay Area counties, with the numbe

The Air District Board of Directors has approved amendments to Rule 11-18 to reduce delays in efforts to decrease toxic air pollution at Bay Area facilities with the highest potential health risks.

🏭 Under Rule 11-18, facilities with elevated pollution-related health risks are required to take action to reduce those risks and limit harmful emissions. The updates streamline the development and implementation of health risk assessments and risk reduction plans, helping move health protections forward more efficiently for communities impacted by toxic air contaminants.

✅ The amendments require facilities to prepare the initial draft health risk assessment, using their detailed knowledge of site operations to identify priority emissions sources earlier in the process. The Air District will continue to review and approve the assessments to ensure they meet regulatory and public health requirements.

Today, 5/26, and tomorrow, 5/27, Bay Area air quality is expected to be Good in all regions.

This week, air quality is expected to be in the Good to low-Moderate AQI category. Tuesday through Thursday, upper-level low pressure is forecast to track southeastward from northern California to southern Nevada, resulting in continued onshore flow, extensive low clouds and cool temperatures across the Bay Area (inland highs in the 70s). Additionally, there will be a slight chance of showers and even an isolated thunderstorm around Thursday, though any rainfall is expected to be light and spotty. Friday through Sunday, weak high pressure is expected to build across California, limiting marine layer clouds and resulting in somewhat warmer inland high temperatures (low 80s).

Last weekend, Air District staff volunteered with Friends of the Urban Forest in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood to plant trees along community sidewalks. 🌳

Staff noticed Air District-funded bike racks installed in the neighborhood years ago that are still standing strong. 🚲 From supporting cleaner transportation options to expanding urban greenery to advancing community-led work through the Bayview Hunters Point/Southeast San Francisco AB 617 process, it was a meaningful reminder of the many ways investments in cleaner air can take root over time. 🌱

Thank you to everyone creating a healthier, greener Bayview for future generations.
