Our CERT volunteers serve as the "help before official help arrives", working with residents to gain the skills and knowledge needed to prepare themselves for emergencies and disasters. We're grateful to have the support of SJFD, SJPD and other government agencies. Captain Thang Vo also volunteers outside his SJFD duty as a CERT Leader for San Jose District 2 and the Vietnamese community.

On Sunday May 5th San Jose CERT participated in Cinco de Mayo parade and celebration along with District 5 & District 8 councilmembers, Santa Clara County Supervisor office, San Jose Fire Museum, SJFD, SJPD and many other local groups and agencies.

The National Weather Service is forecasting moderate to heavy rain from Saturday, February 17, to Monday, February 19, with the probability of 1.5-3 inches of rain falling in Santa Clara County.
Potential impacts to the South Bay include:
• Those living in river, stream, or creek beds may be displaced by rising water.
• Saturated soils will not absorb additional water, causing increased runoff.
• Roadway, urban, and small stream flooding possible (under 40% probability).
• Smaller rivers, streams, and creeks risk flooding at peak storm intensities (under 40% probability).
• Larger rivers will need to be watched for possible flooding (under 25% probability).
• Shallow landslides possible.

• Learn if your home or business is in a Special Flood Hazard Area.
• Register for Santa Clara County’s emergency alert system, AlertSCC.
• Access Valley Water's ALERT system to see stream and reservoir levels in real-time.
• Locate free, filled sandbags.
• Report spills, blockages, or dumping in creeks.
Valley Water employees are working hard to ensure our waterways remain clear of debris and blockages. Our hydrologists are monitoring the storm and its impacts on our reservoirs and waterways and potential flooding in high-risk areas.
We encourage you to prepare by signing up for ALERTSCC for up-to-date information and to find where to get sandbags to protect your property, especially in areas with high flooding risk.

Today San Jose CERT and District 8 CERT Leadership held an informational booth at Reid Hillview Airport Day event to educate and connect with the community to disuss disaster preparedness, community emergency response, neighbors helping neighbors, and how to sign up for the City of San Jose's 20-hour Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class.

SJNCERT will be at the Memorial Day service at Oak Hill on Monday, May 29th, 2023. Ceremony at 1100.
Memorial Day is a time to reflect and remember our military servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for our democracy and liberty.
This Monday, May 29, San Jose Neighborhood CERT team is joining service members in honoring fallen and missing military heroes at Oakhill Funeral Home and MemorKerk. The event is hosted by Dignity Memorial and the Memorial Day Committee of Oak Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
The event features:
Master of Ceremonies - Major Shannon Potts, United States Marine Corps
Keynote Address - CWO3 (Gunner) Angelo Pasciuti, a highly decorated Special Forces Warrior with multiple combat deployments
National Anthem performed by Captain Kelsey Casey of San Francisco, CA., Marine Corps fighter pilot
Ceremonial music by the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West
21 Gun Salute by the Marines of the 23rd Marine Regiment
A Color Guard by the Marines of Recruiting Station San Francisco
A flyover by the 129th Air Rescue Wing
An authentic reenactment of a WWII trench with actors in period uniforms and historic military vehicles

Yesterday San Jose Councilmember Domingo Candelas and Chris Losario from San Jose Office of Emergency Management hosted a CERT Meet and Greet in District 8 to tak about community preparedness and getting local volunteer citizens to be CERT-ified. Thanks SJNCERT founders and members Jeff Levine, Lee Smeckest, Herb Bowen, Uyenthy Nguyen, and Sandy Flores or being part of this great presentation.
