On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved a recommendation to dissolve the South Santa Clara County Fire District (SSCCFD) which currently provides fire protection services to San Martin and unincorporated South Santa Clara County through a contract with CAL FIRE. The Santa Clara County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) will now pursue dissolution proceedings and annexation of SSCCFD territories into the Santa Clara County Fire Department, also known as the Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection District. This process is complex and is likely to take some time to complete. As we work through the details of the dissolution and annexation with the County Executive and LAFCO, we want to be clear that we remain committed to providing the same high-quality services to the cities and towns we serve. Also, in a news report last night, it was inaccurately reported that the CAL FIRE employees currently serving in the SSCCFD would lose their jobs. That is false. CAL FIRE is a large organization well positioned to reassign firefighters to fill other vacancies in their system.
We look forward to working collaboratively with CAL FIRE and the community through the transition process.
