On Thursday, the White House released a proposal that would give political appointees at federal science agencies the role of approving all scientific research awards. Funding approval has historically been determined by apolitical expert scientists to ensure awards are merit-based and without bias.

Yesterday, I joined 3 of my congressional colleagues on an unannounced oversight visit to the California City ICE detention facility, where there had previously been reports of abysmal conditions. Congress must continue to fight for transparency from ICE and hold this agency accountable for any violations of the law.

I had the pleasure to tour the UC Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics yesterday, where they’re doing cutting-edge research, including in fusion energy. California institutions are leading these advancements, and it’s critical that they continue receiving federal support.
