SJFD's Firefighter Recruit Academy 26-01 recently spent the day sharpening their wildland firefighting skills near Calero County Park. Recruits trained in progressive hose lays, mobile attacks, brush cutting, and digging handlines — all critical skills used to help protect our communities during wildfire season.

Wildland training pushes recruits both physically and mentally, building teamwork, endurance, and confidence under challenging conditions.

Think you have what it takes to serve your community?

SJFD is currently recruiting for Firefighter Recruit Academy 27-01. Apply by June 10: https://bit.ly/SJFD_2701

Did you know? Harmful UV rays are actually present year-round, not just during hot or sunny weather. You can still get sun damage on cool, winter days. Even on overcast days, up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can pe*****te the clouds.

To help you stay protected, SJFD's Fire Captain Matthew Herzog shares six common sunscreen myths—and the facts behind them.

As Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, many families will be heading to pools, lakes, and beaches to enjoy the sunshine. While swimming is one of summer’s best activities, it also comes with real risks. Drowning can happen quickly and silently, even in shallow water.

To help you and your loved ones stay safe this holiday weekend and all summer long, San José Fire Department Fire Engineer Mark Garcia shares 10 essential swimming safety tips.

🚒 SJFD is introducing new Battalion Chief command vehicles (i.e., “Chief Buggies”) that will enhance incident command capabilities, better support firefighter operations in the field, and replace our legacy 2013 Chevrolet Suburbans, many of which have exceeded their planned service life.

Battalion Chief vehicles play a critical role at large-scale emergencies, serving as mobile command posts that provide command, coordination, and operational support during complex incidents across San José.

Built on a heavy-duty four-wheel-drive truck platform with a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 engine, these new vehicles feature custom compartments for personal protective equipment, SCBAs, EMS supplies, tools, hydration resources, and an integrated rear command center designed to improve accessibility and operational efficiency on scene.

The upgraded design also aligns with the “clean cab concept” adopted by the NFPA, IAFF, and Firefighter Cancer Support Network by keeping contaminated gear out of the passenger compartment, helping reduce firefighters’ exposure to carcinogenic byproducts.

The first unit is already in service responding to calls, with the remaining frontline vehicles scheduled to be placed into service in phases throughout the summer.

Earlier today, City Manager Jennifer Maguire recognized the work of the San José Fire Department during her 3.1 Report of the City Manager at the City Council meeting. CM Maguire discussed May as National Wildfire Awareness Month and celebrated SJFD’s Wildfire Risk Reduction campaign, which included door-to-door outreach to nearly 7,000 homes in the wildland-urban interface.

Thank you for the kind words and for the invitation to be part of today’s meeting!
