September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize the strength of children facing cancer and the families beside them.

Meet Benny, our September Child of the Month!

Benny is a smart, funny, and active 7-year-old who loves math, reading, his friends, Greek mythology, video games, and playing with his siblings and cats.

His life changed overnight in February when a large tumor was discovered in his brain. Benny was helicoptered to San Francisco, where he underwent a 17-hour brain surgery to fully remove the tumor. Just one week later, he returned to his first-grade classroom!

The tumor was analyzed and found to be DSRCT. There have been fewer than 20 identified cases of this type of tumor occurring in the brain, making Benny’s diagnosis incredibly rare. To help prevent the tumor from growing back, he underwent six weeks of brain radiation this summer and is currently receiving active chemotherapy treatment at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Benny and his family regularly travel to LA for chemotherapy, clinic appointments, blood transfusions, and scans. Jack’s Helping Hand helps ease the financial burden of these trips by providing gas cards, food gift cards, and hotel stays.

None of Benny’s treatments are easy, but he continues to stay positive and enjoy life whenever he can. He started second grade this fall and attends school when he is home and his immune system is strong enough. He remains silly, quick-witted, and fun through it all. To know Benny is to love him!

Septiembre es el Mes de la Concientización sobre el Cáncer Infantil, un momento para reconocer la fortaleza de los niños que enfrentan el cáncer y de las familias que los acompañan.

Benny es un niño de 7 años inteligente, divertido y activo a quien le encantan las matemáticas, la lectura, sus amigos, la mitología griega, los video juegos y jugar con sus hermanos y gatos.

Su vida cambió de la noche a la mañana en febrero, cuando le descubrieron un gran tumor en el cerebro. Benny fue trasladado en helicóptero a San Francisco, donde se sometió a una cirugía cerebral de 17 horas para extirpar por completo el tumor. Solo una semana después, regresó a su salón de clases de primer grado!

El tumor fue analizado y se descubrió que era un TDRCP (tumor desmoplásico de células redondas y pequeñas). Se han identificado menos de 20 casos de este tipo de tumor en el cerebro, lo que hace que el diagnóstico de Benny sea increíblemente raro. Para ayudar a prevenir que el tumor vuelva a crecer, este verano se sometió a seis semanas de radiación cerebral y actualmente está recibiendo tratamiento activo de quimioterapia en el Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (Hospital Infantil de Los Ángeles).

For over 10 years, Biddle Ranch Vineyard has been an incredible partner of Jack’s Helping Hand!
Our partnership began in 2015 when Biddle Ranch Vineyard introduced its Pinot Grigio, donating a portion of every bottle sold to Jack’s Helping Hand. Since then, their support has continued to grow through their Summer Concert Series, bringing our community together while raising additional funds for the children and families we serve.
Through the Pinot Grigio collaboration and Summer Concert Series, they have donated an incredible $42,688 to Jack’s Helping Hand!
We are so appreciative of this longtime partnership and the generosity of the entire Biddle Ranch Vineyard community.

💚Every month, we highlight a child so you can learn about the wonderful children we help in our community. This month, we would like you to meet siblings Alaynnah and Jayden!

Alaynnah is 12 years old and has severe autism, sensory processing disorder, and ADHD, along with significant stomach issues that have required multiple tests, surgeries, and visits with specialists. She loves music, dancing, and Harry Potter.

Her little brother, Jayden, is 2 years old and has severe autism, sensory processing disorder and is nonverbal. He also experiences hearing, breathing, and blood disorders that require ongoing specialty care. Jayden receives weekly infusions at Cottage Hospital and recently underwent two surgeries at Valley Children’s Hospital. He also recently received an AAC device to help him learn to communicate his wants and needs functionally. Jayden loves squishy toys, animals, and playing with water.

Their medical needs require the family to travel frequently to Valley Children’s Hospital, UCLA, and Cottage Hospital for surgeries, specialty appointments, and ongoing care. Jack’s Helping Hand has assisted their family with the costs of travel to these appointments and procedures over the years.
“Jack’s Helping Hand has been a godsend for our family. They have helped us out tremendously over the years, especially during many tough times. This all wouldn’t have been possible without Jack’s Helping Hand and their assistance in getting to all these specialty appointments and surgeries. We are truly grateful for them.”

We are honored to support Alaynnah, Jayden, and their family as they continue navigating appointments, treatments, surgeries, and ongoing care away from home.

💚Cada mes, resaltamos a un niño para que conozcas a los hermosos niños que ayudamos en nuestra comunidad. Este mes, te invitamos a conocer a Alaynnah y Jayden, nuestros hermanos destacados.

Alaynnah tiene 12 años y presenta autismo severo, trastorno de procesamiento sensorial y TDAH, además de problemas gastrointestinales significativos que han requerido múltiples pruebas, cirugías y consultas con especialistas. Le encanta la música, bailar y los libros de Harry Potter.

Su hermano pequeño, Jayden, tiene 2 años y padece de autismo severo, trastorno del procesamiento sensorial y es no verbal. También presenta trastornos auditivos, respiratorios y sanguíneos que requieren atención médica especializada continua. Jayden recibe infusiones semanales en Cottage Hospital y recientemente se sometió a dos cirugías en Valley Children’s Hospital. Además, hace poco recibió un dispositivo de CAA (Comunicación Aumentativa y Alternativa) para ayudarlo a aprender a comunicar sus deseos y necesidades de manera funcional. A Jayden le encantan los juguetes blandidos, los animales y jugar con agua.

Sus necesidades médicas requieren que la familia viaje con frecuencia al Hospital Valley Children’s, UCLA y al Hospital Cottage para cirugías, citas de especialidad y atención continua. Jack’s Helping Hand ha ayudado a su familia con los costos de viaje para estas citas y procedimientos a lo largo de los años.

When a child is diagnosed with a medical condition, families are often overwhelmed by medical jargon, unexpected expenses, and uncertainty about what comes next. Jack’s Helping Hand helps ease that burden by providing assistance with gas, food, and lodging so children can get to their appointments, families can stay together, and parents can focus on what matters most—their child.
Our Assistance Program is available to any family in San Luis Obispo County with a child under 21 who has medical needs.
