When a major storm hits, it often takes the strength of the entire community to recover. San Marcos residents and volunteers have always stepped up when neighbors need an extra hand. Fallen trees and debris can pile up quickly, so now is the time to get prepared to help with recovery efforts the next time severe weather strikes.

We partner with our friends at Mission Able to recruit and organize volunteers, and they have two upcoming Chainsaw Training events at the end of the month. You’re invited to take part and build the skills needed to safely support future cleanup efforts.

Training Details:

Dates: Choose between October 27 or October 28
Time: 8-hour course (Morning classroom instruction; lunch provided; afternoon hands-on field practice)
Cost: Free training ($15 covers the instructional book, which is yours to keep)
Registration: Visit missionablesmtx.zohobookings.com to register and learn more
Note for Mission Able volunteers: Completion of this training is required to participate in chainsaw projects with our organization.

🕸️ Spooky Season Is Here! Let’s Keep It Safe for Wildlife 🎃

Those fake spiderwebs might look festive, but they’re a serious hazard for birds, bees, and even real spiders.

Right now, we’re in migratory bird season—millions of birds are flying through our neighborhoods, and decorations like synthetic webs can entangle and injure them. (This really happens😢)

Most are also not biodegradable, meaning they stick around long after Halloween is over.

Try this instead:
Decorate with natural materials like pumpkins, gourds, and leaves
Skip the fake webs or keep them indoors
Go for reusable alternatives
Let real spiders do the web work 🕷️

🗑Community Clean Up This Saturday, October 10.♻

The City of San Marcos Resource Recovery Division is here to help you dispose of your waste properly. San Marcos Residential Garbage and Multifamily Recycling customers can drop off bulk waste items for landfill and recycling—at no cost! Simply provide a valid ID and a City Utility Bill to gain entry.

⚠Loose debris must be bagged to prevent contamination of the site, individuals, and surrounding areas. Household Hazardous Waste like paint, oil, and other chemicals are not accepted at this event and should be brought to HHW drop-off at 634 East Hopkins.

📆Saturday at 750 River Road from 8am-1pm, or until roll-offs are full.
This event coincides with the October brush drop-off. Bagged yard debris must be removed from the bag. Bags, rope, trash, or non-organic material are not allowed at the brush drop-off site. In order to keep traffic moving, please plan to unload brush first before moving to the Bulk Waste line.

📲Details, a list of accepted items, and other information for the Community Clean Up can be accessed at bit.ly/SMTXCommunityCleanUp

📞Or contact the City of San Marcos Resource Recovery Division at 512.393.8412 with any garbage and recycling questions.
