⏰Heads up! This week, October 19th-23rd, is National Medical Assistant Week! Join us in celebrating our amazing MA Priscilla! 👏👏

Priscilla has been with us for nearly 2 years and works in our clinic as well as with our tuberculosis (TB) treatment program!

🩺National Medical Assistant Week, or MARWeek, is led by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) every full third week of October. It is a national celebration honoring the vital contributions medical assistants make to patient care, health care teams, and the communities they serve. This year's theme is “Educated. Equipped. Empowered.” 💪

So, major shoutout and thank you to Priscilla! Also, we give an additional thank you to all the awesome medical assistants out here who work so hard to support patients and providers. 🥳❤️

🏥October 19-23, 2026 is National Health Education Week! This week is a celebration led by the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), where they aim to increase national awareness on public health issues and understanding of the role of health education. 🎉🎊

SOPHE will be hosting webinars all week about multiple major public health issues! If you are interested in any of them here is where you can find out how to register: https://loom.ly/qTWPTdg

You do not have to be a SOPHE member to register, although webinars may have a fee attached to them.

But what is health education? 🧐
It is the planned process of giving people the knowledge, skills, and motivation they need to make informed choices and adopt healthy behaviors. 💪🍎

📖 Health educators commonly pursue certifications after completing their bachelor’s or master’s degrees. Two nationally recognized credentials by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) are The Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) and Master Certified Health Education (MCHES®)!

Halloween fun, community connections, and so much heart! 🎃💜

Boo to the Blues welcomed approximately 200 community members for an evening of trick-or-treating and connecting with local mental health, substance use, and community resources!

Hosted by the Hays County Health Department in partnership with Cenikor, FESTA, and the Core Four Partnership, this event brought families and local organizations together to make behavioral health education approachable and fun.

The wind moved us indoors, but our vendors and team brought the Halloween spirit with them! 👻 Thank you to every partner, volunteer, and vendor who helped make this evening possible, and to every family who joined us.

A special thank you to Commissioner Michelle Cohen for her generous donations in support of this event! 💜

We are so grateful for this community. Boo to the Blues will return next year!

Estamos muy agradecidos a esta comunidad. ¡Boo to the Blues volverá el año que viene!

🏠 Rehoming and Surrendering: Understanding Your Options
As of 10/11/2026, the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter has a current animal population of:
🐶 130 dogs in the shelter & 26 dogs in foster
🐱78 cats in the shelter & 91 cats in foster

They only continue to take in more every day! So, due to rising numbers and limited space, we encourage you to looking into rehoming your pet before considering surrendering them to the shelter. While shelters work hard to care for animals, they can be high-stress environments, especially for pets who are used to a quiet home setting. We understand this can be a difficult decision, and we’re here to support you through the process. You can follow this rehoming guide to help. 🐾💗

Have any questions or concerns?
We’re here to help. Our goal is to support public health, animal welfare, and community collaboration. Please contact Hays County Health Department’s Animal Welfare Services if you have any questions.
