Every day, families and communities across the United States lose loved ones to overdose.

According to the CDC, overdose is the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18–45, a heartbreaking reminder that substance use disorder is a public health crisis, not a moral failing.

Behind every statistic is a son, daughter, parent, friend or neighbor whose life mattered.

Recovery is possible – prevention, education, risk reduction, and access to treatment save lives.

Darryl Liu, Health Services Manager at San Mateo County Correctional Health Services, has seen how even individuals who we may not consider vulnerable to substance use and overdose are susceptible. He also reminds us that help is always available, along with people who are willing to listen without judgment.

Don’t let the flu keep you from afternoons with Grandma.

Did you know? Older adults, pregnant women, young adults, children, and people with other underlying health conditions are most at risk of getting the flu, but everyone six months and older should get vaccinated. It’s the best way to protect the whole family and reduce the risk of getting potentially serious complications.

Get your flu vaccine from your health care provider or a pharmacy. If you do not have health insurance, San Mateo County Health offers no-cost flu vaccine clinics at locations throughout the county. Find dates, locations and age requirements at smchealth.org/flu. It takes about two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination, so don’t delay.

Give wellness your best shot this flu season by getting vaccinated early.
