Marin County Parks offers for public use and enjoyment an extensive system of regional and community parks, open space preserves, and trails. These lands provide us with clean air and water, outstanding beauty and recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. The department consists of two divisions, the Parks and Landscape Division and the Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD). Our team is made up of committed professionals serving in the core programs of operations and maintenance, planning and resource management, volunteer, environmental education, and administrative services.

As early as Monday, Oct. 19, the Marin County Fire Department, in coordination with Marin Water, may implement a prescribed burn on the Mt. Tam Watershed. The burn is planned for the Lagunitas Meadow and Pine Point area near the Bon Tempe Reservoir along Alex Forman Trail and Pumpkin Ridge Trail and may cover up to 25 acres.

We ask the community to please refrain from dialing 9-1-1 to report smoke in this area. The operation may continue for additional days, if needed, to complete work in the planned areas.

This date is tentative as all burn operations are dependent on favorable weather, fuel conditions and air quality. As a result of the operation, residents may see or smell smoke. As with other vegetation management approaches, such as goat grazing and hand crews, prescribed fire creates critical fuel breaks that can reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and leave less dense, more resilient woodlands behind. We hope that all the efforts and events bring about awareness and support within Native communities!
A bit of history into the origin of Indigenous People's Day as told by Britannica: The idea of replacing Columbus Day with a holiday honoring Indigenous peoples was proposed in 1977 at the United Nations International NGO (nongovernmental organization) Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas. More than a decade later South Dakota became the first state to replace Columbus Day, celebrating Native Americans’ Day in 1990. Berkeley, California, was the first city to make a change, adopting Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 1992.

Loma Alta Preserve landslide repair is complete. A significant slide occurred during the winter of 2023, along Old White Hill Grade Fire Road and the Sunrise Fire Road. ⚠️ 10/14/2026 Update: Postponed until further notice.

In coordination with Marin County Parks, the Marin County Fire Department has identified priorities for a prescribed burn at Gary Giacomini Preserve. A burn may occur as early as October 14. The objectives are to reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest resilience. Smoke may be visible in the preserve, parts of San Geronimo Valley, Fairfax, and nearby communities. Avoid calling 9-1-1 to report a prescribed burn. Leave phone lines open.
