Mission accomplished!

Amazing work by the Marin County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team and our allied agencies!

This may have been one of the most challenging missions our SAR team Marin County Search and Rescue has ever undertaken.

Called in by our friends at the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office Office, our team of 11 made the treacherous, near-vertical climb up Mount Shasta, hauling rescue gear to reach a climber who had fallen into a crevasse and broken his leg.

Stranded more than 12,000 feet up the mountain, the climber couldn’t be reached by helicopter on day one because severe weather made a safe landing impossible.

Navigating a maze of loose boulders and slippery terrain in punishing 60 mph wind gusts, our team joined allied agencies, including BAMRU and the USDA Forest Service , to reach the injured climber and provide care for 24 hours.

Using specialized skills and a technical rope system, rescuers carefully lowered the patient down a steep, rocky slope. Through close coordination with our allied agencies, we were able to get the climber to a helicopter, which transported him to a local hospital.

This incredible mission highlights not only the courage and skill of our volunteers but also the power of interagency teamwork.

When agencies work together, even the most daunting challenges can lead to extraordinary rescues.

The CSSA Medal of Valor honors law enforcement officers who demonstrate extraordinary bravery and go above and beyond the call of duty.

Last week, one of our own received this prestigious award for risking his life to save a driver in distress during a life-threatening emergency.

On February 4, 2025, Deputy Michael Dawson was on patrol during a heavy rainstorm. At approximately 5 a.m., dispatch received a 911 call from a motorist whose car had slid off a quiet rural road and into a creek channel, where rushing water was quickly filling
the vehicle.

Driving through pounding and blinding rain, Deputy Dawson arrived within minutes and located the driver.

With water pouring into her nearly submerged car, he knew time was running out. As the vehicle filled with water, Deputy Dawson broke the rear windshield and pulled the driver to safety just as the last pocket of air inside the car disappeared. During the harrowing
rescue, captured on body camera, Deputy Dawson was nearly swept away by the powerful current as he risked his own life to save hers.

This extraordinary act of heroism embodies what it means to serve with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.

Our motto is straightforward and made with you in mind: “In Partnership With Our Communities.”

It is a mission we strive to fulfill every day.

While there is always room for improvement, we are grateful that you place your trust and confidence in us and feel a sense of partnership with the Sheriff’s Office.

Today, Sheriff Scardina released the results from the first six months of our survey of individuals who have called us for help.

The numbers speak for themselves:

92% of respondents were very satisfied or satisfied with our dispatchers.

93% were very satisfied or satisfied with our deputies’ handling of calls.

90% were very satisfied or satisfied with the overall response of our organization.

Sheriff Scardina shared, “These results reinforce my belief that our organization sets the highest standard of professionalism, partnership with, and service to our communities.”

A busy weekend for our Marin County Sheriff's Office Search And Rescue team! Marin County Search and Rescue

The first 3 slides show our team helping Mill Valley Police Department with the successful search for a missing elderly woman with dementia who walked away from her care facility. A team of more than 60 was deployed before she was found 🙏.

The following slides show our team helping Point Reyes National Seashore search for a missing surfer who was last seen in the waters off Point Reyes.

We had a great time meeting so many students at Marin Christian Academy’s Law Enforcement Day!

We talked about what we do, answered some fun questions, and showed off our gear!

These kiddos definitely kept us on our toes! Thanks for having us!

We can’t wait to see you all again!

Flock Facts

Here’s our third post designed to clear up misinformation and answer questions.

In this series we aim to address all the confusion over what Flock is and isn’t.

The Sheriff’s Office began using Flock in 2024. Since then, the technology has become a tool our investigators use to generate leads, assist in locating missing people, and support criminal investigations.

It has helped generate hundreds of investigative leads and has been associated with dozens of arrests.

We also recognize that Flock raises important questions about privacy and how technology is used in our communities. Those concerns deserve to be heard and openly discussed.

Our goal with Flock Facts is simple: to be transparent about what Flock does, what it doesn’t do, and how we use it-so you can make up your own mind.

We welcome the questions, the conversation, and the scrutiny.
