September is recognized nationally as Su***de Prevention Month and Su***de Prevention Day is observed today, Sept. 10, providing an opportunity to raise awareness, strengthen protective supports for young people, and ensure that students, families, and school staff know how to access help when it is needed.
The Marin County Office of Education (MCOE) supports su***de prevention efforts across Marin County schools through training, education, family engagement, and access to crisis resources:
- MCOE provides public school mental health professionals with access to specialized training to strengthen their ability to identify, assess, and respond to students who may be at risk.
- MCOE makes Signs of Su***de (SOS) Curriculum available to all middle and high school students countywide. The program helps students recognize warning signs of depression and su***de, encourages help-seeking, and teaches students how to connect themselves or a peer with a trusted adult.
- MCOE will host Talk Saves Lives on Sept. 22 at 6:00 p.m., a virtual educational program for parents and caregivers, presented by the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention (AFSP). Talk Saves Lives provides an introduction to su***de prevention, including common risk factors and warning signs, and practical guidance for supporting someone who may be struggling.
- MCOE reminds students, families, staff, and community members that anyone needing immediate crisis support can call or text 988 to connect with the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
