09/01/2026

APPARATUS ADDITION (09/01/2026)- Medic 8 is officially in service. This unit will be housed at Station 2 (Ensley Center) and serve as a dedicated medical response unit. It is equipped to MFR level, also carrying a CPR machine and AED. Adding this unit to the fleet, will improve medical response throughout our service area. A huge thank you goes out to our Nelson Township administration who made this purchase happen. We are excited to improve our services!

TRAINING 08/29/2026- Today your Sand Lake firefighters trained on Grain Bin rescue. Members sat thru an hour and half lecture before spending the afternoon doing practical drills in a simulated grain bin. This training opportunity came with impeccable timing due to Harvest season being right around the corner for many members of our community! A few members of Croton Fire, Solon Fire and Cedar Springs Fire joined as well to further enhance our mutual aid partnerships.

EXTRICATION ASSIGNMENT 08/16/2026: Around 10:30pm your Sand Lake Firefighters were called into Ensley Township for a vehicle accident with extrication needed. Units arrived on scene to find live power lines involved. An Emergent response for the power company was placed, once they arrived, the patient was freed from the vehicle. Units remained on scene for approximately 3 hours.
We would like to thank the collaboration between Kent and Newaygo county dispatch to ensure the safety of responders and the patient.

AUTOMATIC AID STRUCTURE FIRE 08/05/2026: Just after 3pm your Sand Lake Firefighters were dispatched into Cedar Springs for automatic aid on a working structure fire. Sand Lake responded with 10 personnel, 3 engines and 2 Tenders bringing 13,000 gallons of water to the scene. Units remained on scene for 2 hours preforming Fire Suppression and Overhaul.
We are always happy to help our neighbors when needed!

STRUCTURE FIRE 07/30/2026: Just after 7pm your Sand Lake FireFighters were called into Ensley township for a reported structure fire. Automatic aid provided from Ashland-Grant Fire District and Solon Fire Department, mutual aid from Croton Township was added. Sand Lake units arrived on scene with a working attic fire. Units remained on scene for close to 3 hours using over 10,000 gallons of water. We would like to thank our aid partners for their continued assistance!

Happy 4th of July! Plenty of events going on around town to celebrate America’s 250th! Personnel participated in the Sand Lake Parade, and will be on standby at the demolition derby this afternoon. If you see us out and about, say hello!

TRAINING- The department was lucky enough to receive an acquired structure for training purposes. Hose advancement, Search, overhaul, and vertical ventilation were topics covered.

Also, new smoothbore nozzles were placed in service tonight. The Elkhart Brass 7/8” smoothbores will flow 160 Gallons of water per minute!

Job Opportunity Announcement: The department is seeking motivated individuals to join our expanding team. Residents of Northern Nelson Township (north of 19 Mile Road), Ensley Township, southern Pierson Township (south of Cannonsville Road and South of W Wood Lake Rd), or the Village of Sand Lake who are interested in joining our department are encouraged to apply. Comprehensive training is provided, with fire academy typically commencing in the fall and EMS training in the spring. Application packets can be obtained from the Nelson Township offices or requested via email at [email protected].
