Further, a Sandersville patrol car was seen on the video at the time of the alleged occurrence but was not flagged down. The Laurel Police Department is deeply saddened by the loss of Animal Control Officer Benjamin McSwain, who faithfully served our community with compassion and dedication.

Benjamin was known for his warm smile, his respectful and kind spirit, and his willingness to step in and do whatever was asked of him. He approached his work with a positive attitude and a genuine desire to help others. Outside of his work, Benjamin loved spending time supporting kids in the community and enjoyed attending Bible study—he even shared his faith by giving a few sermons at church.

Benjamin was passionate about law enforcement and had hoped to one day become a police officer. His dedication to serving others and his commitment to the Laurel Police Department were evident in the way he carried out his duties each day.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Benjamin’s family and friends during this difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
