In just 15 days, applications are due for the 2027 Senate Page Program. Applicants seeking admission must be 13 or 14 years of age on the first day of session (second Wednesday in January) and a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

I had to double-check to be sure, but I’ve been sounding the alarm on surveillance technology legislatively since about 2019.

The technology may have changed, but the concerns haven’t: the same misuse persists, the same lack of adequate training and oversight exists, and the same threats to individuals’ protected privacy remain.

Next session, I’ll once again take on the fight to protect Virginians from the widely adopted use of surveillance technologies like Flock, Axon, and others — I am also glad to see a reckoning happening here in Virginia of people standing against being subjected to their movements being captured, stored, and in some instances monitored.

There’s a growing chorus from members inside the Virginia General Assembly to make those flock cameras illegal in every part of the commonwealth.
