On the evening of Sunday, May 17th Sandy Springs Fire units responded to a reported structure fire in the 5000 block of Glenridge Dr. As the first units arrived they observed flames on an exposed porch of a residential apartment building. Along with SSPD, SSFD was able successfully evacuate all residents without injury. The fire was quickly brought under control with a coordinated attack. Multiple families were displaced and were assisted by the apartment management.

On this Memorial Day, Sandy Springs Fire honors and remembers the men and women who laid down their lives in defense of this country and the ideals for which it stands. Your sacrifice is not forgotten.

Sandy Springs announced the promotion of Fire Chief Keith Sanders on May 21 to assistant city manager for infrastructure and capital program delivery, filling a position that’s been open for just over a year.

At the same time, Division Chief Jesse Bernard was promoted to interim fire chief. Sanders steps into the assistant city manager role after 12 years as fire chief, while the city advances plans to overhaul three of its fire stations.

Interim Fire Chief Bernard first joined the Sandy Springs Fire Department in 2015. He served as deputy fire marshal, where he helped lead the transition of the Fire Marshal’s Office and develop the city’s Next 10 Comprehensive Plan.

Bernard has 25 years of service in fire departments, a master’s degree, a professional certification in project management, and an array of national fire service designations. In 2021, he served as chief building official and an analyst at Nebraska Medicine, where he gained experience in code compliance, permitting, and capital facilities operations.

Bernard returned to the Sandy Springs Fire Department in 2023, most recently as division chief, overseeing daily operations, recruitment, succession planning, and strategic planning initiatives.

Last week multiple members of SSFD attended classes held at the Metro Atlanta Firefighter Conference. MAFFC consists of two days of classroom instruction and two days of HOT (hands on training) classes held at fire training facilities all over the Metro Atlanta area. The training our personnel receive is among the best in the country and better prepares our personnel for their roles at SSFD.

Congratulations to Lt. Dan O’Neill on his promotion to Captain. Captain O’Neill will continue to serve the citizens of Sandy Springs while assigned to station 1. He was lucky enough to be awarded his new shield on employee appreciation Hawaiian shirt day.

Levi’s Story: Our son, Levi Lansdell was only 2 years old when he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He underwent 5 rounds of aggressive chemotherapy while inpatient at Scottish Rite Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for over 200 days. Levi rang the bell in March of 2023 and was finally declared in Remission that same month! He is 6 years old now and in Kindergarten. He is the best big brother to his little sister, Lexi. He loves baseball, basketball, & football, riding his four wheeler, fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family & friends!
