The Official Hillcrest High School Huskies are looking to improve their season record to 7-2 in the scheduled match-up with Taylorsville. The Huskies stand a solid chance of notching the "W" if key players — such as Miles Ence — show up like they did in Week No. 8 of the prep football season. For his strong play last week against Cyprus, Ence was singled out by the Deseret News sports editors as a 5A Top 20 Performer of the Week. Ence caught five passes for 121 yards for two touchdowns against the Pirates. The final score: 53-6. The lights that usually shine Friday night at Schick Stadium will come on tonight, Oct. 8, for a rare Thursday evening game. The current Parry's Power Guide predicts the homefield battle with the Warriors will be won by Ence and his Husky teammates. Let's go, Huskies! UHSAA Utah High School Activities Association

Members of the Canyons Board of Education got a look at the progress underway at the new Canyons Innovation Center, now under construction and scheduled to open in August 2027. The Innovation Center will expand on the profession-based learning already happening at the Canyons Technical Education Center, where students gain the experience needed for immediate entry to high-wage, high-demand careers. “The future of education is being built right now,” said CIC Director Reid Newey. “Our students are working on real-world, industry-sponsored projects alongside our workforce partners. This collaborative environment ensures that our curriculum remains aligned with current market needs while giving students invaluable, resume-building experience.” At the center, students will learn in classrooms that look and operate like professional workspaces, using the kind of industry-standard equipment you find in health clinics, engineering and construction firms, and cybersecurity companies. And the opportunity is closer than you might think: Applications for the Innovation Center’s first class of students open in January. Stay tuned — there’s much more to come.

Schools are built for students. But great schools are built with them. The Canyons Board of Education at its Oct. 6 Board meeting welcomed this year’s Student Advisory Council — 30 student leaders representing all of CSD's high schools and a wide range of interests, from athletics and the arts to career-focused learning and academics. Throughout the year, these students will meet with members of the Board to weigh in on issues facing Canyons School District and provide a student perspective as the Board develops policies, tackles challenges and plans for the future. “Your opinions really do matter,” said Board President Amber Shill, thanking the students for their involvement and commitment. “The perspectives you share with us help inform our discussions and influence the decisions we make. Thank you for being willing to speak up and represent your fellow students.” We’re grateful for the willingness of these students to help shape the future of Canyons.

Ask award-winning authors Brandon Mull and Thal Dixon, and they’ll tell you they got where they are today thanks to a love of reading, and a little encouragement. They’ll also tell you how important visiting schools is when it comes to encouraging students to read, which is why they both spent time at East Midvale and Midvalley elementaries today.
Mull and Dixon spent time with students and handed out signed copies of their books to each student.
Mull, New York Times Best Selling author of the Fablehaven series, spoke with students about ways to broaden their imagination while writing about things they’re passionate about.
" Developing a love of reading had a bigger impact on my life than maybe any other single thing,” says Mull. "Once you find a really great book, you're never the same. You become a reader for life. That was definitely true for me, and I hope it's true for some of these kids."
School visits are a full circle moment for Dixon, author of 'The P Book’ and many others, as he recalls a visit from a poet when Dixon was in eighth grade.
“Because of his visit, I am where I am today,” says Dixon. “So, when I go into the schools, I know that the impact of meeting an author in person is huge. And there may be people in here that, children that have never thought about becoming an author and pursuing writing, and this is going to inspire them. It happened for me, and I just pass it on."
Operation Literacy, Intermountain Healthcare, and the R. Harold Burton Foundation donated roughly 1,000 books to the Eagles and Junior Huskies, allowing each student to take home a copy of one of the author’s books based on their grade.
Janelle Youngstrom, the book drop coordinator for Operation Literacy, says students are 80-percent more likely to read a book when they hear directly from the author.
“When a kid connects with an author, and then they connect with that book, it just gets them so excited about reading,” Youngstrom says. “It helps connect kids and gives them an opportunity to talk about the book and about the author, and to have this shared experience which is a really amazing thing."

"If music be the food of love,” Shakespeare once wrote, “play on." Music groups from Canyons high schools that competed at the 50th annual Shakespeare competition last weekend at Southern Utah University certainly played on — and received more than applause for their performances. The performing student-artists walked away with armfuls of hardware for major wins in the large-school division. Corner Canyon High won the first-place Sweepstakes trophy and Jordan High School was announced as the third-place Sweepstakes winner. The Charger choirs won first place in the Troubadour, second in Canzonetta and Madrigal, and third place in Minstrel to capture the top award. The Beetdigger choirs also impressed the panel of judges with their vocal skills and talents. Jordan took home third-place awards in Madrigals and Troubaour categories. Jordan’s choir was also selected to perform their Madrigals and Troubadour pieces in the showcase performance. Jordan’s dance troupe also took fourth-place in Ensemble and the Duo/Trio categories.
