🔥ICYMI: Last night, the Seminole County Fire Department, Oviedo Fire Department and Orange County Fire Rescue Department, Florida responded to a fire that possibly started when a homeowner was using a torch to burn weeds, with windy conditions, which contributed to the fire spreading to the home.

🚫Always use extreme caution with open flames, especially on windy days. If a fire occurs, call 911 even if you believe you've extinguished it. Our firefighters use thermal imaging cameras amd other tools to detect hidden heat and fire extension that may not be visible, helping prevent a small fire from becoming a much larger one.

🎉🚒Congratulations to Lieutenant John "Tripp" Hansen on his retirement after 25 years of dedicated service with the Seminole County Fire Department.

Lt. Hansen began his SCFD career at Fire Station 42 in Geneva under Lt. Gary Hiers before serving 11 years at Fire Station 13 in Forest City. After being promoted to Lieutenant, he served at Fire Station 41 in Midway, spent five years leading Tech 1 while assigned to Fire Station 24 in Winter Springs, and concluded his career at Fire Station 26 in Winter Springs.

Throughout his career, Lt. Hansen made a lasting impact on the department. He has been a member of Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 4 since 2014, deploying to numerous hurricane responses across the Southeast, the 2021 Surfside condominium collapse, and the 2025 Texas flooding disaster.

In 2019, he helped establish SCFD's Drone Team alongside Lt. Tom Mirisola and Technology Coordinator Michael Pattison, and he also served as project manager during the development of the department's Engineer Program.

Lt. Hansen credits many mentors for helping shape his career, including retired Chief Jack Jarrell (from Ormond Beach FD), retired Lt. Jimmy VanWormer, retired Deputy Chief Mike Johansmyer, retired Assistant Chief Bryon Chaney, and Lt. Steve Laib.

When asked what he will miss most, Lt. Hansen said it is "the people I had the opportunity to serve alongside, both past and present, and knowing that regardless of how small an action may seem, it can make a difference in the lives of those who call for help."

In retirement, he looks forward to spending more time with his family and taking more cruises.

Thank you, Lt. Hansen, for your 25 years of service to the citizens of Seminole County. Congratulations on retirement and best wishes in the years ahead!

Our Fire Prevention Team recently visited students at Choices In Learning Elementary Charter School and The Double R Private School to teach an important Fire Prevention Month lesson on lithium-ion battery safety.

Students learned simple steps to help prevent battery fires:
🔋 Don't overcharge batteries.
🔋 Use only the battery and charger designed for your device.
🔋 Keep batteries away from heat.
🔋 Never use damaged batteries, cords, or chargers.
🔋 Keep batteries away from pets.
🔋 Dispose of batteries properly according to local guidelines.

A little knowledge can go a long way in preventing fires and keeping our community safe. Thank you, Choices in Learning, for helping us spread this important message! National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

During Fire Prevention Week, the Seminole County Fire Department (SCFD) partnered with the American Red Cross of North and Central Florida and the City of Casselberry to help make homes safer through the American Red Cross Sound the Alarm initiative.

Firefighters, SCFD's Fire Prevention Team and Red Cross volunteers visited homes in an older Casselberry neighborhood to inspect existing smoke alarms, install free smoke alarms where needed, and provide valuable home fire safety education, including lithium-ion battery safety.

Together, volunteers visited nearly 250 homes and installed nearly 80 free smoke alarms, helping more families stay safe and better prepared in the event of a fire.

A special thank you to:
• Zaza Cuban Comfort Food for providing coffee, pastries and homeowner coupons.
• The Casselberry Police Department for serving as our central meeting location.

Working together, we're helping make our community safer—one home at a time. 🚒🏠❤️
