I’m committed to eliminating the use of pesticides in our waterways in Orange County.

Our pilot project for San Juan and Trabuco Creek areas is in action. Crews are removing targeted nonnative and overgrown vegetation through mechanical and hand removal-without the use of pesticides-while protecting native plants and sensitive habitats.

We’re collaborating with the Creek Team, Surfrider Foundation, Orange County Coastkeeper, the California Native Plant Society, and the Acjachemen Nation. Preserving the creeks' native ecosystems while maintaining critical flood-control capacity is imperative as we will face an unprecedented El Niño storm season this winter.

Today, Orange County is delivering 9,000 cubic yards of sand to protect our coastal communities. Sand is infrastructure— we’re continuing our fight to replenish and restore our coastline for the safety of every resident. Protecting our coastline and our economy.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors, raise awareness, and stand alongside those impacted by breast cancer. We asked members of our community what this month means to them. Here’s what they had to say:

UPDATE: Service resumes with speed restrictions and inspections after each train movement. Significant service delays are expected and work continues.

🚨This afternoon, continued high tides impacted our rail line signal system and brought debris onto our tracks, causing temporary closures of the Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains. Crews are making progress clearing debris, but passengers should anticipate continued delays. Thank you to OCTA for providing bus bridges to ensure our passengers can complete their trips.

I enjoyed participating in the grand opening of the expanded Ketchum-Libolt Park in Costa Mesa led by Mayor Pro Tem Manuel Chavez and funded with a $1.2M grant from Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris. Recognizing the memory of two officers who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting their community while building a place for future families to enjoy.

Ketchum-Libolt Park is a tribute to Costa Mesa police officers James “Dave” Ketchum and John “Mike” Libolt, who were killed March 10, 1987 in a helicopter crash. They are the only Costa Mesa police officers ever to die in the line of duty.

Their memory is furthermore engraved in our community by a park that will continue to serve the streets they once protected. We will tell the story of their service— let this park serve as a reminder to us all. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Sunday coastal storm update:

Our County Public Works and emergency management teams continue helping coastal cities protect neighborhoods from flooding and high surf.

✅ The County delivered 20,000 sandbags earlier in the response. OC Public Works also deployed heavy equipment crews and a bulldozer to northern Newport Beach to support work along the coast.

✅ Our County emergency management staff coordinated with Water Emergency Response of Orange County (WEROC) to bring additional crews, pumps, and equipment from partner agencies to help Newport Beach pump floodwater.

✅ My staff is working City of Dana Point and with California Coastal Commission staff and homeowners along Beach Road in Capistrano Beach to help secure emergency permits and connection to resources for work to protect homes from coastal flooding and erosion.

✅ Our County Emergency Operations Center remains activated to support response and recovery.

✅ OC Parks announced park and trail closures this morning due to wet and muddy conditions. Visit parks.oc.gov/alerts for the full list of closures and updates.

✅ County Environmental Health issued a rain advisory for ocean and bay waters. Avoid swimming near flowing storm drains, creeks, and rivers, and avoid contact with runoff on the beach. Elevated bacteria levels can persist for at least three days after rain. A bacterial warning also covers all of Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor. Visit ocbeachinfo.com for updates.

City crews continue maintaining protective sand berms, pumping floodwater, and providing sandbags to residents. Newport Beach has temporarily closed Newport Pier, Balboa Pier, and the Wedge for public safety and to protect the berms.

Please give crews room to work, avoid floodwater, and follow city updates for changing conditions. Register at AlertOC.com for emergency alerts.

Thank you to our County workers, city crews, and mutual aid partners for working together to protect homes, businesses, and our communities.

This week I joined Assemblywoman Laurie Davies, the mayors of San Clemente and Dana Point, the California Coastal Commission staff and commissioners, and Undersecretary for Natural Resources Bright to educate them on the coastal erosion in South Orange County and our needs. Our south county leaders are working together to get sand onto these beaches. We prioritized a waterside view since the beach is completely eroded.

I appreciated discussing potential strategies for saving our coastline and how quickly we can mobilize to protect our county from El Niño. Thank you to Orange County Harbor Patrol for safely transporting us on the tour.

Newport Beach neighbors:

High tides flooded streets on the Balboa Peninsula today. At my request, OC Public Works is delivering additional sandbags to Newport Beach as the City’s supplies run low.

Residents can collect filled sandbags at the City Corporation Yard: 592 Superior Avenue

Please avoid unnecessary travel to the Peninsula and give emergency personnel room to work.

A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect through Tuesday, October 13, at 2 p.m. More elevated surf is expected Sunday, so please prepare for additional coastal flooding this weekend.
