iLEAD Exploration’s DreamUp Team Mycotecture is helping build the future of space exploration! 🍄🏗️🚀

These innovative student researchers designed a cutting-edge experiment to answer a critical question for long-duration space travel: How does microgravity affect the structural integrity of mycelium-based biocomposite materials?

Mycelium—the root structure of fungi—could hold the key to growing sustainable building materials for lunar habitats, Mars bases, and eco-friendly structures on Earth. While astronauts aboard the International Space Station National Lab test the materials in orbit, Team Mycotecture is running parallel ground control experiments here on Earth.

In late September, DreamUp Launch Team Alfalfa set to work optimizing their experiment for a journey to the International Space Station (ISS) National Lab!

Designed by learners from iLEAD Exploration, iLEAD Flex, and iLEAD Agua Dulce, the project explores a key question: What is the impact of microgravity on the germination of three Medicago sativa (alfalfa) variants—UCAL2250, Ameristand 901TS, and Sholty?

While the team conducts ground control tests here on Earth, astronauts aboard the ISS are actively running the experiment in orbit!

iLEAD Exploration High School Spotlight: Rylan

Rylan spent 4 weeks at the prestigious California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) at Cal Poly Pomona! Immersed in the animation department, Rylan created paper-cutout animations, flipbooks, and a short film—earning college credit, a Governor’s medal, and the title of California Arts Scholar.

Between learning life drawing, hearing from guest artists like Pendleton Ward (Adventure Time) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls), and making new connections, Rylan gained major industry inspiration.

Thanks to the flexible iLEAD Exploration schedule and Dual Enrollment options, Rylan is already working on an ambitious new animated short film.

Rylan’s Advice: "Talk to your teachers about what you’re interested in... Ask questions, stay curious, and be willing to try new things."
