Nine of the 10 bargaining units representing City of Santa Barbara employees have agreed to defer 2.5 percent in pay increases already negotiated, thus saving City Hall $2.3 million for fiscal year 2021. This came in response to the drastic financial damage wrought by COVID-19. Only the firefighters’ bargaining unit is still negotiating terms and conditions of any pay deferrals. This savings also includes 2.5 percent pay cuts for managers and department heads. City Administrator Paul Casey and City Attorney Ariel Calonne are taking a 5 percent pay cut.

Yesterday, I sent a letter, along with U.S. Senators Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein, to the Secretary of the Air Force to express our strong support of making Vandenberg Air Force Base the permanent home of U.S. Space Command.

Along with creating jobs, its selection provides exciting possibilities for the future of our national security. I look forward to the Air Force’s decision later this year.

The U.S. Air Force will begin formally evaluating Vandenberg Air Force Base as the future permanent headquarters for the U.S. Space Command. The base has met the screening criteria required to move into the next phase, Air Force leadership informed base officials this week.
