BART Silicon Valley BART Silicon Valley Construction on the second phase of the project will commence as additional funding is secured.

VTA's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Extension is a 16-mile extension of the existing BART system to San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara, which will be delivered through a phased approach. The first phase, the Berryessa Extension, is a 10-mile, two-station extension, beginning in Fremont south of the future BART Warm Springs Station and proceeding in the former Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way through Milpitas, the location of the first station, and then to the Berryessa area of north San Jose, at the second station. VTA continues project development activities for the second 6-mile phase of the project that includes a 5.1 mile-long subway tunnel through downtown San Jose, and ends at grade in Santa Clara near the Caltrain Station.

💧The water treatment plant plays an important role in construction on VTA's BART Silicon Valley Phase II project.

Groundwater is pumped from the construction area to support safe excavation. Since the site was historically used for rail operations, the water goes through treatment to prevent potential contaminants from spreading offsite.

The treatment process uses a series of filters to remove contaminants, while ongoing sampling and monitoring ensure all requirements are met.

This system supports both construction progress and environmental protection.

🚧 Keeping a project of this scale moving safely takes a lot of behind-the-scenes coordination.

The Site Services team provides operational, logistical and safety support across VTA's BART Silicon Valley Phase II project.

From supporting material handling to managing water systems and safety watches, the team helps keep construction activities running efficiently.

As work progresses and site conditions change, Site Services crews regularly develop and adjust routes to help everyone move safely throughout the project.

⚙️ Ever wonder how our project continues to run smoothly? Our crews work hard every day to coordinate the placement and movement of materials on and off the site.

To date, more than 226,000 cubic yards of excavated material have been removed; approximately 2,220 tons of steel bracing components have been delivered and staged; and nearly 13,900 cubic yards of concrete have been placed.

Every delivery keeps construction moving forward and supports the next phase of work.

🚇 Ever wondered what the launch structure at VTA’s BART Silicon Valley Phase II Extension Project looks like below the surface?

Each component of the structure plays a critical role in this complex underground system. The caterpillar shaft supports assembly and launch of the Tunnel Boring Machine, while the diaphragm walls (D-walls) and sheet pile form a ramp connecting underground operations to the surface.

Constructed using multiple structural systems and excavation methods, the launch structure is steadily coming together as work advances below ground. Follow along with more updates at VTABART.org!
