Place sandbags near vulnerable doorways, garages, and other areas prone to water intrusion. Clear debris from gutters and drainage areas. Secure outdoor furniture and loose items.
Avoid driving or walking through flooded roadways. Monitor local weather alerts and emergency notifications.

Honoring the Legacy of Charles “Charlie” Milton Peterson | 1948–2020

Today, we honor and remember Charles “Charlie” Milton Peterson—a man whose lifetime of public service, courage, leadership, and dedication left a lasting impact on the National Park Service, wildland firefighting community, and Santa Clara–Ivins Fire & Rescue.

Charlie spent an extraordinary career serving some of our nation’s most treasured public lands. His assignments took him to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Buffalo National River, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Arches National Park, Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and ultimately Mesa Verde National Park.

Charlie retired from the National Park Service in 2004 as the Chief Ranger of Mesa Verde National Park—but retirement did not mean the end of his service.

He returned to one of his true passions: wildland firefighting.

For the next 15 years, Charlie continued working seasonally with the National Park Service and later with the State of Utah. His experience and commitment eventually brought him into our local fire service, where he served with Ivins City Fire before finishing his fire service career as the Assistant Fire Chief of Santa Clara–Ivins Fire & Rescue.

Charlie represented what public service is supposed to be about. His career was defined not simply by the positions he held or the awards he received, but by his character, courage, willingness to serve, and the example he set for those around him.

His influence remains part of our department today. Several of our current firefighters had the privilege of working alongside Charlie, learning from his experience and witnessing firsthand the character and leadership he brought to the fire service.

Although Charlie passed away in 2020, his legacy continues through the people he mentored, the communities he served, and the firefighters who still carry forward the lessons he taught them.

We are proud that Charlie Peterson was part of the history of Santa Clara–Ivins Fire & Rescue, and we are honored to remember his lifetime of service.

Our firefighters recently spent time sharpening their skills during hands-on structure fire training, focusing on hose advancement, line management, operating in limited visibility, and firefighter self-rescue.

To create a more realistic training environment, crews utilized a smoke generator machine while personnel also had their vision obstructed to simulate the extremely limited visibility encountered inside a dark, smoke-filled structure. These conditions required firefighters to rely on their training, communication, touch, and situational awareness while advancing hoselines through hallways, around corners, and through confined areas.

Crews also practiced firefighter self-rescue techniques, reinforcing the skills needed if a firefighter becomes disoriented, trapped, separated from their crew, or encounters an unexpected obstacle while operating inside a structure.

Training in challenging and realistic conditions helps build confidence, strengthen teamwork, and reinforce the fundamentals needed to remain calm, communicate effectively, and problem-solve when conditions are rapidly changing.

Every evolution is another opportunity to improve our readiness and ensure our personnel are prepared when our community needs us most.

Today, the fire service mourns the tragic incident of a firefighting helicopter crew involved in wildfire suppression operations in Utah, at the Widemouth 2 Fire near Kanosh.

Our SCIFR Firefighters assigned to the Widemouth 2 Fire are safe and accounted for.

Our hearts are with the crew members, their families, friends, coworkers, and everyone affected by this devastating incident. We also stand alongside the agencies and responders continuing to work under challenging and hazardous conditions.

Our crews continue to work hard on the Widemouth 2 Fire near Kanosh, supporting ongoing suppression efforts alongside numerous agencies.

Today, firefighters successfully extinguished a fire involving one of the area's bridges—a critical piece of infrastructure that provides emergency vehicle access into the incident. Protecting access routes like these is essential to maintaining firefighter mobility, supporting evacuations if needed, and ensuring resources can reach where they are needed most.

Firefighters continue to face rapid rates of fire spread and extreme fire behavior driven by very low relative humidity, strong winds, and triple-digit temperatures. These conditions create a dynamic and challenging environment that requires constant situational awareness and coordinated teamwork.

E342 and E362 are currently assigned to the Widemouth 2 Fire near Fillmore and Kanosh, where crews are working alongside firefighters from across the region. Challenging conditions, including low relative humidity, strong winds, and triple-digit temperatures, have contributed to rapid fire growth and increased operational complexity.

While we are proud to support our neighboring communities through mutual aid, these deployments also strengthen our own department. Working on large, complex wildfires provides invaluable real-world experience, allowing our personnel to train and operate alongside some of the most experienced wildland firefighters in the country.

These incidents help our members develop advanced qualifications and leadership skills, including serving as Engine Bosses, Task Force Leaders, Medical Unit Leaders within the Incident Command System, and Incident Commanders on wildland fires. The knowledge and experience gained on these assignments directly benefit our community by enhancing our preparedness and capabilities when responding to local wildland emergencies.

We appreciate the continued support of our community as our firefighters serve both at home and wherever they are needed. Together, mutual aid strengthens every department and helps ensure the best possible response when communities face their greatest challenges.

Today, the Ivins City Parks Department successfully completed their CPR, First Aid, and AED recertifications, reinforcing the knowledge and skills needed to respond confidently during a medical emergency.

We are proud to partner with our city departments to ensure employees are prepared to act when every second counts. Strong interdepartmental teamwork helps create a safer community by increasing the number of trained personnel who can provide immediate care before emergency crews arrive.

According to the American Heart Association, immediate, high-quality CPR combined with the early use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can significantly improve survival from sudden cardiac arrest. Early recognition, calling 911, starting CPR, and using an AED as soon as it is available are critical links in the Chain of Survival and can make the difference between life and death.

Thank you to the Ivins City Parks Department for your commitment to public safety and your dedication to serving our community. Together, through training, preparedness, and teamwork, we are building a stronger and safer Ivins and Santa Clara.

We know fireworks are a long-standing part of Pioneer Day traditions, and we want everyone to enjoy the holiday while also helping protect our homes, neighborhoods, and surrounding wildland areas.

Please remember:
• Use fireworks only in designated areas shown on your city’s fireworks map
• Keep a garden hose, bucket of water, or other water source nearby
• Never allow young children to handle fireworks
• Never discharge fireworks near dry vegetation or other combustible materials
• Completely extinguish used fireworks and properly dispose of debris
• If a fire starts or an emergency occurs, call 911 immediately

Southern Utah remains hot and dry, and even a small spark can quickly become a dangerous fire. Please be aware of your surroundings and celebrate responsibly.

Have a safe and happy Pioneer Day from Santa Clara–Ivins Fire & Rescue! Thank you for doing your part to help keep our communities and Southern Utah safe and beautiful!

🚫 FIREWORKS RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT THROUGH JULY 5 🚫

Due to extreme wildfire conditions across Southern Utah, the discharge of fireworks is prohibited within Santa Clara City and Ivins City through July 5th.

We recognize that celebrating with fireworks is a long-standing tradition for many families, and we understand this temporary restriction may be disappointing. These measures are in place to help reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during a period of exceptionally dry conditions and elevated fire danger.

A single spark can quickly ignite vegetation, threatening homes, businesses, public lands, and the safety of our community and first responders. By working together and respecting these restrictions, we can help prevent unnecessary fires and keep our communities safe.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and commitment to protecting Santa Clara, Ivins, and the surrounding Southern Utah communities.
