It is with profound sadness that the Los Angeles Fire Department announces the off-duty death of Active-Duty Firefighter III Justin A. Curtis, Fire Station 18, B Platoon.

Deceased: July 27, 2024

Appointed: February 19, 2002

Our thoughts and prayers are with Justin's family, friends and fellow firefighters.

The U.S. Hotshot Association is proud to present the USHA 100 Fires Project.

The USHA 100 Fires Project tells the history of fatal wildfires in the US via QR codes throughout the USHA fundraising Calendar.

These fires shaped the evolution of the wildland fire service in the US and claimed many lives.

The USHA 100 Fires Project and Calendar is meant to honor those lives and carry lessons forward.

On many of the dates in this calendar you will find a QR code to scan with your smart phone camera. It will open a summary of a fire which happened on that date in our history.

The summaries have been created in a basic format which can be used in a morning crew briefing.

The 2024 USHA Calendar is on sale NOW and once again features photos from IHC crews throughout the country. Thanks to everyone who submitted pictures!

Hi everyone!

I have some great news to share with you all, my book has been officially published. I got word from the publisher last Fri that it would be out this week. After the roller coaster ride that I've been on, I wanted to see it firsthand before I shared it with you.

I've literally put hundreds and hundreds of hours of research and a crazy number of hours of writing, editing, cutting, giving up, taking breaks, starting over, two steps forward then three steps back, five steps forward, editors and a publisher that didn't work out, etc. It's kind of like that piece of line on the Klamath or the Payette that never seems to end, with the echoes of 'only two more chains' playing in my head. I finally tied in the piece of line, and it held through a major wind event. Whew!

I have completed almost 70 interviews for this project. With so much interview material left, I've started working on a 2nd book. Right now, my plan is to synthesize the interviews into an oral history book. I don't think this one will be as difficult, but we'll see. Haha!
